Le 30 janvier 2011, alors que les demandes en placoplâtre connaissent une forte diminution, la société Us Gypsum, vieille de 88 ans, ferme son usine à Empire, dans le Nevada, transformant la bourgade en ville fantôme quelques mois plus tard. Longtemps employée avec son mari dans l'usine, Fern, veuve depuis peu, doit quitter la région pour retrouver du travail. Après avoir revendu quelques biens, l'ancienne ouvrière s'achète un van, et, avec quelques maigres possessions, prend la route en plein hiver pour trouver du travail en différents endroits du pays.

Le jeune cowboy Brady, étoile montante du rodéo, apprend qu'après son tragique accident de cheval, les compétitions lui sont désormais interdites. Nomadland is de verfilming van de gelijknamige roman van Jessica Bruder uit 2017. Na de economische ineenstorting van de arbeidersstad van Nevada waar ze woonde, besluit Fern (Frances McDormand) met haar camper op pad te gaan en een nomadisch leven te leiden.
