Irving Penn est né en 1917. Il a étudié avec Alexey Brodovitch à l'école d'art du Musée de Philadelphie et en 1943, il produit sa première photographie couleur, une nature morte, pour la couverture de Vogue. Pendant sa carrière de plus de soixante ans, il a créé un travail intense de portraits, de natures mortes, des modelages. Irving Penn est l'auteur de plusieurs livres , tels que Moments Preserved (1960), Worlds in a Small Room (1974), Flowers (1980), Passage (1991), Still Life (2001) et Earthly Bodies (2002)
