Abstract

This book explores the intercultural policy paradigm emerging within diversity and migration studies. Drawing on empirical studies of cultural diversity and placing a focus on the current crises of identity in Europe, Zapata-Barrero argues for an intercultural model of citizenship that prioritises contact between diverse people. In looking forward to a post-multicultural era, his analysis suggests how we can better manage the challenges presented by our increasingly complex, multifaceted societies. This thoughtful text will appeal to students and scholars across politics, sociology, anthropology and social psychology, as well as policy makers and social entrepreneurs around the world grappling with issues around migration, diversity and citizenship. Ricard Zapata-Barrero is a Professor of Political and Social Sciences at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He is also Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Immigration at UPF, on the Board of Directors for IMISCOE, an expert on the Intercultural Cities Program, and founded the Intercultural Cities Network in Spain in 2014. Additionally, he is a Compendium expert within the Council of Europe.

Abstract

In the current European dilemma as to whether to increase diversity policies or move towards an assimilationist policy, it is difficult to know what the Spanish approach is. This book argues that Spain represents a context of ""multiple diversity"", where two frameworks interact: an old, unresolved one, arising from democratic transition, and a new one due to immigration. This explains the Spanish practical approach, where the recent past plays the role of an iron cage, limiting institutional innovation and change. The author proposes a heuristic model, to better understand the ""Spanish labor

Abstract

This open access book covers the main issues, challenges and techniques concerning the application of qualitative methodologies to the study of migration. It discusses theoretical, epistemological and empirical questions that must be considered before, during, and after undertaking qualitative research in migration studies. It also covers recent innovative developments and addresses the key issues and major challenges that qualitative migration research may face at different stages i.e. crafting the research questions, defining approaches, developing concepts and theoretical frameworks, mapping categories, selecting cases, dealing with concerns of self-reflection, collecting and processing empirical evidence through various techniques, including visual data, dealing with ethical issues, and developing policy-research dialogues. Each chapter discusses relative strengths and limitations of qualitative research. The chapters also identify the main drivers for qualitative research development in migration studies. It is a unique volume as it brings together a multidisciplinary perspective as well as illustrations of different issues derived from the research experience of the recognized authors. One additional value of this book is its geographic focus on Europe. It seeks to explore theoretical and methodological issues that are raised by distinctive features of the European context. This volume will be a useful reference source for scholars and professionals in migration studies and in social sciences as well. The publication is also addressed to graduate and post-graduate students and, more generally, to those who embark on the task of doing qualitative research for the first time in the field of migration.

Abstract

This open access Regional Reader describes population movement circulating within the Mediterranean area, for any reason or from any region, be them European, African, Asian or originating from any of the Mediterranean shores. It showcases a plurality of approaches to and applications of Mediterranean migration, contributing to a regional approach to migration, thereby defending this regional approach by scaling Mediterranean migration issues. This book covers a large set of questions related to the migration research agenda, such as: market and economy, politics and policies, super-diversity and intersectionality, media, society, welfare and the environment through five main parts: Geo-political Mediterranean Relations, Governance, Policies and Politics, Mobility drivers and Agency, Cities, History and Social Transformations, and Economy and Labour Markets. This Regional Reader provides an interesting read to scholars, researchers, but also policy makers and civil society organizations’ high representatives, international foundations and institutions interested in linking the Mediterranean and migration.

Abstract

The informal economy is a constantly present undercurrent in the cities and the countrysides of Europe. Sometimes it becomes suddenly visible: groups of men standing around on certain streets waiting for someone to offer them a day's work; trinket sellers on beaches and rose sellers in restaurants; a newspaper revealing dire conditions of overcrowding for agricultural workers or factory workers; the collapse of a building built with substandard materials or inadequately trained employees who were not on the official payroll. But generally the informal economy tries to remain hidden - it depends upon not being noticed. These conditions also tend to attract the attention of organised crime. Where trade is being carried out under cover, illegal substances and even people may be trafficked as well. In this book, various authors explore the connections between the informal economy and organised crime. The question is posed whether countries' national social and economic policies affect the form and extent of their informal economies and the extent and nature of connections with organised crime. This volume stems from a series of European seminars funded by the European Commission under the auspices of the co-ordination action CRIMPREV, funded under the 6th Framework and co-ordinated by GERN.

Abstract

"This volume demonstrates that migration and diversity related concepts are always contested and provides a reflective critical awareness and better comprehension of the complex questions driving migration studies. Examining interaction between concepts in the public domain, the academic disciplines, and the policy field, this book helps to avoid simplification or even trivialization of complex issues. Recent political events question established ways of looking at issues of migration and diversity and require a clarification or reinvention of political concepts to match the changing world. Applying five basic dimensions, each expert chapter contribution reflects on the role concepts play and demonstrates that concepts are ideology-dependent, policy/politics-dependent, context-dependent, discipline-dependent, and language-dependent, and are influenced by how research is done, how policies are formulated, and how political debates extend and distort them. This book will be essential reading for students, scholars and practitioners in migration studies/politics, migrant integration, citizenship studies, racism studies and more broadly of key interest to sociology, political science, and political theory"--
