"This book examines the practices of contesting evidence in democratically constituted knowledge societies. It provides a multifaceted view of the processes and conditions of evidence criticism and how they determine the dynamics of de- and re-stabilization of evidence. Evidence is an essential resource for establishing claims of validity, resolving conflicts, and legitimizing decisions. In recent times, however, evidence is being contested with increasing frequency. Such contestations vary in form and severity-from questioning the interpretation of data or the methodological soundness of studies to accusations of evidence fabrication. The contributors to this volume explore which actors, for what reasons and to what effect, question evidence in fields such as the biological, environmental, and health sciences. In addition to actors inside academia, they examine the roles of various other actors, including citizen scientists, counter-experts, journalists, patients, consumers, and activists. The contributors tackle questions of how disagreements are framed and how they are used to promote vested interests. By drawing on methodological and theoretical approaches from a wide range of fields, this book provides a much-needed perspective on how evidence criticism influences the development and state of knowledge societies and their political condition. Evidence Contestation will appeal to scholars and advanced students working in philosophy of science, epistemology, bioethics, science & technology studies, the history of science and technology, and science communication"--

Mit Beiträgen von Helena Bilandzic, Tommaso Bruni, Sarah Ehlers, Stefan Esselborn, Sascha Dickel, Kay Felder, Mariacarla Gadebusch Bondio, Christine Haßauer, Susanne Kinnebrock, Magdalena Klingler, Emilia Lehmann, Sabine Maasen, Ruth Müller, Jutta Roosen, Helmuth Trischler, Andreas Wenninger, Fabienne Will, Karin Zachmann Evidence has become a key resource within our knowledge society. At the same time, during the course of the 20th century, negotiations on the validity of knowledge became a political and controversial phenomenon which has since shaped the multiple fields of science, technology, politics, medicine and society. As the diagnosis of a ‘post-factual age’ makes clear: knowledge will not be accepted in modern society per se; instead knowledge operators have to satisfy demands to give validity to their findings. But which practices should they apply for this purpose? How is the validity of knowledge negotiated in different public spheres? Using an interdisciplinary perspective, this anthology examines the dynamics of evidence practices. The authors cover examples from research in the fields of medicine, communication, the economy, science, technology and environmental studies. At the same time, they connect analysis from recent history with current phenomena. Abundant, salutary, problematic - energy makes history. As a symbol, resource and consumer good, it shapes technologies, politics, societies and cultural world views. Focussing on a range of energy types, from electricity and oil to bioenergy, this volume analyzes the social, cultural and political concepts and discourses of energy and their implementation and materialization within technical systems, applications, media representations and consumer practice. By examining and connecting production, mediation and consumption aspects from an international and interdisciplinary perspective, the book offers an innovative view on how energy is imagined, discussed, staged and used. »The book is highly relevant for scholars of energy and society, especially for those looking for new ways of analysing relations between energy, culture, politics and technology. All the essays are fresh, new and inspiring for scholars investigating energy and society in Europe as well as in other countries.« Jytte Thorndahl, ICON, 20/1 (2014) »Ein kohärenter Band, dessen Beiträge um das Verhältnis von Energie, Technologie und Gesellschaftsentwicklung kreisen und Rüdiger Graf, H-Soz-u-Kult, 24.09.2012 Reviewed in: ETDE, 7 (2012)
