This book explores the history of conservative evangelical, Mormon, and Catholic responses to the ecumenical movement and the debates among them concerning questions of Christian unity, the Bible, and the role of religion in American public life from the 1950s to present. Even as Catholics, Mormons, and evangelicals spurned the ecumenical movement and insisted on their respective faiths as the only authentic path to salvation, they found themselves increasingly aligned against the cultural and political changes sweeping the nation in the 1960s and 1970s. Recognizing each other as defenders of school prayer and opponents of abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, and gay rights, evangelicals, Mormons, and Catholics drew together as a powerful political force that helped elect Ronald Reagan to the presidency and bolstered the burgeoning conservative movement. While the emergence of the Religious Right benefited Republican politicians and modern conservatism, it also occasioned soul-searching among religious conservatives who worried they had sacrificed religious orthodoxy for political expediency. Drawing from a diverse range of sources, including religious publications, church and denominational archives, sermons, political tracts, and presidential papers, this book offers an exciting new interpretation of religious conservatism in the modern era. Guarding against liberalism and secularism, Mormons, evangelicals, and Catholics drew closer together, but in doing so, they maintained and strengthened their theological critiques of each other.
