Abstract

With the Strait of Gibraltar being the only natural connection with the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea is an almost fully enclosed body of water. The restricted connection leads to very limited water exchange, which leads to small tidal heights, reduced refreshment and a complex circulation pattern. To be able to fully understand this interesting basin, accurate simulations are a necessity. This thesis focuses on the tides within the Mediterranean Sea. A numerical model is created using the TELEMAC 3D software. This model is used to simulate the tides using only one open boundary inside the Atlantic Ocean, just west of the Strait of Gibraltar. Using the TPXO database, the water depths are extracted as a boundary condition. Meteorological data such as wind velocities and air pressure are implemented into the model. To guarantee smooth simulations, the bathymetry is modified to reduce the amount of steep slopes in the topography. The final model is calibrated to different data such as continuous sea level measurements and satellite altimetry data. A harmonic analysis and a vector analysis are used to evaluate the model. Furthermore, the model is optimised to have a fast execution time. The results are satisfactory and are discussed using multiple other studies. An accurate simulation of six months is executed within three hours. During the creation of this model and thesis, extensive assistance and information was provided by IMDC, International Marine & Dredging Consultants.

Abstract

In the ever changing modern society, continuous learning and personal development became more important than ever. To support this, a number of measures have been introduced by the Belgian Government. In 2019, a restructuring took place in the Flemish Region with the introduction of Flemish Training Leave. The aim was to make additional training more accessible for employees and the system more user friendly. The introduction of this new system is the right time to take a closer look at the measure and analyse its efficiency. Therefore, the number of users of the new system was analysed, together with the corresponding costs. To obtain a more complete picture of the use of training incentives in Flanders and Belgium, these figures were compared with the previous system, namely Paid Educational Leave in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. Finally, a comparison on training incentives available in other countries was conducted to investigate the position of Flanders regarding additional training within Western Europe.
