Abstract

Dr. Wu Dan’s Introducing Writing Across the Curriculum into China is an important and provocative research study that is broadly international in scope. Of particular significance for education in China, this book provides a historical analysis of writing instruction in China and an original application of activity theory used to analyze problems and possibilities for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) in higher education. Through an examination of important aspects of WAC as it has developed in the United States, Dr. Wu Dan brings together various perspectives in support of developing and sustaining WAC programs in China and by analogy throughout the world. Her work opens new avenues for research in writing and for the teaching of courses throughout the curriculum using a writing-in-the-disciplines approach. A major contribution to international WAC scholarship, Introducing Writing Across the Curriculum into China will be invaluable to English faculty and to all readers interested in educational innovations in China.

Abstract

Protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) is an essential protein Ser/Thr phosphatase, which regulates various cellular processes in eukaryotic cells. The activity and substrate specificity of PP1 is strictly controlled by associated polypeptides, which are known as Regulatory Interactors of Protein Phosphatase One (RIPPOs). Currently, more than 200 RIPPOs have been described, all acting as subcellular targeting subunits, substrate recruiters, and/or activity modulators for associated PP1. Knowledge of the physiological substrates of each individual PP1 holoenzymes would massively enhance the functional understanding of these complexes. At the start of my research project, a straightforward strategy for substrate mapping of PP1 holoenzymes was not available. In the first part of my PhD project, I developed a tool to trap substrates of individual PP1:RIPPO holoenzymes. I found that a fusion of an hypoactive point mutant of PP1 and a RIPPO accumulates with its associated substrate, due to a lack of efficient dephosphorylation. The associated substrates were subsequently trapped and identified by Mass Spectrometry analysis. The identified substrates (novel and known proteins) were independently validated by in vitro dephosphorylation experiments. In this way, I performed substrate trapping, followed by substrate identification, for PP1:NIPP1, PP1:PNUTS, PP1:MYPT and PP1:RepoMan holoenzymes using the corresponding hypoactive PP1-RIPPO fusions. Furthermore, I found that RepoMan itself was a substrate of associated PP1. Together, my results suggest that hypoactive fusions represent an easy-to-use tool for substrate identification of multimeric protein Ser/Thr phosphatases individual holoenzymes.

Abstract

With the rapid development of mobile Internet and smart personal devices in recent years, mobile search has gradually emerged as a key method with which users seek online information. In addition, cross-device search also has been regarded recently as an important research topic. As more mobile applications (APPs) integrate search functions, a user's mobile search behavior on different APPs becomes more significant. This book provides a systematic review of current mobile search analysis and studies user mobile search behavior from several perspectives, including mobile search context, APP usage, and different devices. Two different user experiments to collect user behavior data were conducted. Then, through the data from user mobile phone usage logs in natural settings, we analyze the mobile search strategies employed and offer a context-based mobile search task collection, which then can be used to evaluate the mobile search engine. In addition, we combine mobile search with APP usage to give more in-depth analysis, such as APP transition in mobile search and follow-up actions triggered by mobile search. The study, combining the mobile search with APP usage, can contribute to the interaction design of APPs, such as the search recommendation and APP recommendation. Addressing the phenomenon of users owning more smart devices today than ever before, we focus on user cross device search behavior. We model the information preparation behavior and information resumption behavior in cross-device search and evaluate the search performance in cross-device search. Research on mobile search behaviors across different devices can help to understand online user information behavior comprehensively and help users resume their search tasks on different devices.

Abstract

This volume contains the papers presented at AI 2007, the 20th conference of the Canadian Society for the Computational Study of Intelligence (CSCSI). AI 2007 attracted a new record of 260 paper submissions. Each paper was assigned to three reviewers who tirelessly worked to provide high-quality reviews. Out of these, 46 high-quality papers were accepted for publication by the Program Committee. The organizationof AI 2007 has bene?ted from the collaborationof many individuals. Abstract

This book provides an overview of the impact of the pandemic in China and the USA and presents a research agenda for use, access, and adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the era of COVID-19. The global COVID-19 pandemic changed lives overnight and exposed socially vulnerable populations to ever-challenging situations. One significant challenge was the use, access, and adoption of technological resources. To understand how socially vulnerable populations managed the COVID-19 pandemic and adapt to the new normal, it is important for researchers and practitioners to identify the challenges and understand the perceptions of technologies. Through various research studies, this edited volume addresses the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the adoption of technologies (from artificial intelligence to telehealth and telecommunications) among some socially vulnerable populations (including children, older adults, COVID-19 patients, and general marginalized populations) in the world. The information divide faced by socially vulnerable groups is studied as well as the dimension of vulnerabilities and the impacts of specific technologies.
