Abstract

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 21th International Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing, LCPC 2008, held in Edmonton, Canada, in July/August 2008. The 18 revised full papers and 6 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. The papers address all aspects of languages, compiler techniques, run-time environments, and compiler-related performance evaluation for parallel and high-performance computing and comprise also presentations on program analysis that are precursors of high performance in parallel environments.

Abstract

The 15th Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing was held in July 2002 at the University of Maryland, College Park. It was jointly sponsored by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Ma- land and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS).LCPC2002broughttogetherover60researchersfromacademiaand research institutions from many countries. The program of 26 papers was selected from 32 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and sometimes by additional reviewers. Prior to the workshop, revised versions of accepted papers were informally published on the workshop’s website and in a paper proceedings that was distributed at the meeting. This year, the workshopwas organizedinto sessions of papers on related topics, and each session consisted of two to three 30-minute presentations.Based on feedback from the workshop, the papers were revised and submitted for inclusion in the formal proceedings published in this volume. Two papers were presented at the workshop but later withdrawn from the ?nal proceedings by their authors. We were very lucky to have Bill Carlson from the Department of Defense give the LCPC 2002 keynote speech on “UPC: A C Language for Shared M- ory Parallel Programming.” Bill gave an excellent overview of the features and programming model of the UPC parallel programming language.

Abstract

The 19th Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing was heldinNovember2006inNewOrleans,LouisianaUSA.Morethan40researchers from around the world gathered together to present their latest results and to exchange ideas on topics ranging from parallel programming models, code generation, compilationtechniques, paralleldatastructureandparallelexecution models, toregisterallocationandmemorymanagementinparallelenvironments. Out of the 49 paper submissions, the Program Committee, with the help of external reviewers, selected 24 papers for presentation at the workshop. Each paper had at least three reviews and was extensively discussed in the comm- tee meeting. The papers were presented in 30-minute sessions at the workshop. One of the selected papers, while still included in the proceedings, was not p- sented because of an unfortunate visa problem that prevented the authors from attending the workshop. We werefortunateto havetwooutstanding keynoteaddressesatLCPC2006, both from UC Berkeley. Kathy Yelick presented “Compilation Techniques for Partitioned Global Address Space Languages.” In this keynote she discussed the issues in developing programming models for large-scale parallel machines and clusters, and how PGAS languages compare to languages emerging from the DARPA HPCS program. She also presented compiler analysis and optimi- tion techniques developed in the context of UPC and Titanium source-to-source compilers for parallel program and communication optimizations.

Abstract

Itisourpleasuretopresentthepapersacceptedforthe22ndInternationalWo- shop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing held during October 8–10 2009 in Newark Delaware, USA. Since 1986, LCPC has became a valuable venueforresearchersto reportonworkinthegeneralareaofparallelcomputing, high-performance computer architecture and compilers. LCPC 2009 continued this tradition and in particular extended the area of interest to new parallel computing accelerators such as the IBM Cell Processor and Graphic Processing Unit (GPU). This year we received 52 submissions from 15 countries. Each submission receivedatleastthreereviewsandmosthadfour.ThePCalsosoughtadditional externalreviewsforcontentiouspapers.ThePCheldanall-dayphoneconference on August 24 to discuss the papers. PC members who had a con?ict of interest were asked to leave the call temporarily when the corresponding papers were discussed. From the 52 submissions, the PC selected 25 full papers and 5 short paperstobeincludedintheworkshopproceeding,representinga58%acceptance rate. We were fortunate to have three keynote speeches, a panel discussion and a tutorial in this year’s workshop. First, Thomas Sterling, Professor of Computer Science at Louisiana State University, gave a keynote talk titled “HPC in Phase Change: Towards a New Parallel Execution Model.” Sterling argued that a new multi-dimensional research thrust was required to realize the design goals with regard to power, complexity, clock rate and reliability in the new parallel c- puter systems.ParalleX,anexploratoryexecutionmodeldevelopedbySterling’s group was introduced to guide the co-design of new architectures, programming methods and system software.

Abstract

In August 1999, the Twelfth Workshop on Languages and Compilers for P- allel Computing (LCPC) was hosted by the Hierarchical Tiling Research group from the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The workshop is an annual international forum for leading research groups to present their current research activities and the latest results. It has also been a place for researchers and practitioners to - teract closely and exchange ideas about future directions. Among the topics of interest to the workshop are language features, code generation, debugging, - timization, communication and distributed shared memory libraries, distributed object systems, resource management systems, integration of compiler and r- time systems, irregular and dynamic applications, and performance evaluation. In 1999, the workshop was held at the International Relations/Paci c Studies Auditorium and the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UCSD. Seventy-seven researchers from Australia, England, France, Germany, Korea, Spain, and the United States attended the workshop, an increase of over 50% from 1998.
