Abstract

Etel Adnan (b.1925) is a Lebanese-American poet, essayist and visual artist. This will be the first book to present a full account of Adnans fascinating life and work, using the drama of her biography, the complexity of her identity, and the cosmopolitan nature of her experience to illuminate the many layers and dimensions of her paintings and their progress over several crucial decades. Adnan came relatively late to painting - her first images were created in the mid-1960s in response to the Californian landscape. Her vocabulary of lines, shapes and colours has changed little since then, and yet there are huge variations in mood, texture, composition and material. Similarly, there is a balance between understanding her paintings as pure abstractions, emulating the shape of thought, and seeing them for the actual landscapes of the many places Adnan has loved, embraced and responded to. Tackling the complexities of her subject with skill and insight, Kaelen Wilson-Goldie unpacks Adnan's multi-layered career to capture the full scope of her artistic endeavours and impressive achievements.

Abstract

Saloua Raouda Choucair, born in 1916 in Beirut, was the first abstract artist in Lebanon, and her exhibition in 1947 at the Arab Cultural Gallery in Beirut is considered to have been the Arab world's first abstract painting display. In 1948 she left Lebanon and went to Paris, where she studied at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts and attended Fernand Leger's studio. In 1950, she was one of the first Arab artists to participate in the Salon des Realites Nouvelles in Paris. By 1962 she began to concentrate completely on sculpture, and by 1963, she was awarded the National Council of Tourism Prize for the execution of a stone sculpture for a public site in Beirut. Choucair's work has been considered as one of the best examples of the spirit of abstraction characteristic of Arabic visual and geometric art, apparently disconnected from the observation of nature.

Abstract

This is an anthology of essays that first appeared in The Artist as Curator, a series that occupied eleven issues of Mousse from no. 41 (December 2013/January 2014) to no. 51 (December 2015/January 2016). It set out to examine what was then a profoundly influential but still under-studied phenomenon, a history that had yet to be written: the fundamental role artists have played as curators. Taking that ontologically ambiguous thing we call “the exhibition” as a critical medium, artists have often radically rethought conventional forms of exhibition making. This anthology surveys seminal examples of such exhibitions from the postwar to the present, including rare documents and illustrations.

It includes an introduction and the twenty essays that first appeared in Mousse, a newly commissioned afterword by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and two additional essays that appear here for the first time, discussing twenty-two exhibitions by the Avant-Garde Argentinian Visual Artists Group; Mel Bochner; Marcel Broodthaers; Hank Bull, Shen Fan, Zhou Tiehai, Shi Yong, and Ding Yi; John Cage; Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro, and the CalArts Feminist Art Program; Collaborative Projects Inc. (Colab); Alice Creischer, Andreas Siekmann, and Max Jorge Hinderer; Liam Gillick and Philippe Parreno; Group Material; Richard Hamilton and Victor Pasmore; David Hammons; Martin Kippenberger; Mark Leckey; Goshka Macuga; Lucy McKenzie and Paulina Ołowska; Hélio Oiticica; Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari; Martha Rosler; Avdey Ter-Oganyan; Philippe Thomas; and Andy Warhol.
