Since its founding in 1991, Basel-based Luca Selva Architects has realized a wide range of residential projects. Many of these projects, like a home featuring an art studio or extensive collection of paintings, inventively incorporate these specific contexts. Others involve complex composition of space in order to accommodate several generations or more than one family. The first book on the renowned firm, Luca Selva Architects―Eight Houses and a Pavilion features nine of its projects. Through them, readers gain a sense of Luca Selva Architects’s interest in the home as a means for exploring larger questions of space, typology, and architectural phenomenology. Included are more than one hundred illustrations, from floor and site plans, to sections and elevations, as well as an essay on the single-family home as an architectural task and an interview by Daniel Buchner with the firm’s founder, Luca Selva.

Housing of exceptional quality has been developed in the greater Zurich area since the mid-1990s. Public funding, the high standard of the competition culture and a vibrant architectural scene has resulted in a rich field of experimentation for good residential architecture. The approximately 500-page volume on Zurich housing construction is an anthology of over 100 individual buildings, ensembles and settlements developed over a period of 20 years. It is an impressive representation of an intense, blossoming housing development culture that has also attracted international attention.

Under the title of Continuity, seven monographs of works by the architect Max Dudler have been assembled in a slipcase. Along with the buildings represented, the volumes address seven subjects pertinent to the European city. The publications which appeared over ten years time thus document in word and image the continuous occupation of the firm with the ongoing building of our cities. The overview that emerges shows how Dudler systematically developed his conceptual approach in conjunction with the relevant thematic perspective of ideas derived from the history of each city. Buildings like the Bewag Haus am Gendarmenmarkt from 1997 - the oldest building documented in the series - still looks as crisp, concrete and current as they did when they were built. Dudler's buildings are the material proof for him of the validity of his insistence on continuity as the essential attitude in dealing with the city - from a material as well as intellectual standpoint.

The House of Switzerland is a mobile building that serves as the official visitors' center for Switzerland at major international events. Following its debut at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the building went on to serve events in Zurich, Milan, and Rio de Janeiro. This book takes a close look at the architectural and design challenges presented by a building that has to be mobile, accessible, and visually striking. Drawing on materials from the planning process conducted by Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the architectural firm Spillmann Echsle Architects, which built the house together with Ortreport, the book presents a dictionary of all elements in the building set for the house, illustrated with images and plans rendered with rich technical detail. A discussion between the key figures involved in the project rounds out the book, exploring the process of creating such an iconic representation of a nation abroad.

This volume studies climate as a design factor and examines its influence on energy and design consequences. Instead of being abstract and technical, the perspective is vivid and spatial, thereby deliberately stimulating the search for inspiring solutions.

The architectural structuring principle of the cellular compartment floor plan is as simple as it is economical, yet it allows for spatial and combinatorial freedom that can be interpreted in ever-new, ever-different ways. The resulting self-contained units or spatial sequences are suited for residential purposes as much as for office buildings, museums or schools, with the floor plans providing highly dynamic and surprising traffic patterns and views. The cellular compartment floor plan is the generating principle in many buildings, projects, and competition entries by Basel-based office Luca Selva Architects, who have been continually developing this typology in their many years of practice, modifying it and adapting it for new applications in different projects. It is therefore at the center of this new book on the work of the prolific office. The numerous plans and photographs are supplemented by a theoretical essay by Christoph Wieser and a conversation between Luca Selva and Patrick Gmür. The book for the first time sheds light on this surprisingly sparsely researched topic, and thus its wider significance for the discourse reaches beyond the exemplary designs by Luca Selva Architects.
