Metastatic Carcinomas of Unknown Origin, by Mark R. Wick, MD, is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated discussion of the clinical features, pathologic attributes, and treatment approaches of metastatic carcinomas of unknown origin (MCUOs). More than 30,000 cases of MCUOs are identified in the United States each year, and since treatment plans for tumors are predicated largely on their primary sites, management can be especially difficult. This unique text provides a framework for approaching these complex issues, with contributions from international experts in the field of MCUOs. T

Pathology is an inherently subjective discipline, and therefore is often referred to as both an art and a science. Over the years, laboratory physicians have implemented special tissue stains and molecular techniques to limit subjectivity in the discipline. Beginning in the late 19th century, histochemical stains were developed to assess diagnostic biochemical reactions in tissue. Histochemistry has recently seen a resurgence in popularity because of the higher costs of other newer methods. Today, this technique is used by almost every pathology laboratory across the world. This book comprehensively covers all diseases for which that technique plays a central role in diagnosis. Every anatomic region is covered in detail with examples of appropriate staining techniques, and the book is heavily illustrated with over 850 color photomicrographs. This is the first monograph to be published on histochemistry in 15 years, and it is the only one that is diagnostically-oriented.

Focusing on practical, patient related issues, this volume provides the basic concepts of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) as they relate to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and presents various practical applications. It includes EBM concepts for use in the identification of cost-effective panels of immunostains and other laboratory tests and for improvement of diagnostic accuracy based on the identification of selected diagnostic features for particular differential diagnosis. EBM concepts are also put forth for use in Meta-analysis to integrate the results of conflicting literature reports and use of novel analytical tools such as Bayesian belief networks, neural networks, multivariate statistics and decision tree analysis for the development of new diagnostic and prognostic models for the evaluation of patients. This volume will be of great value to pathologists who will benefit from the concepts being promoted by EBM, such as levels of evidence, use of Bayesian statistics to develop diagnostic and other rules and stronger reliance on "hard data" to support therapeutic and diagnostic modalities.

Part of the in-depth and practical Pattern Recognition series, Practical Pulmonary Pathology, 3rd Edition, helps you accurately identify and interpret neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the lungs by using a pattern-based approach. Leading diagnosticians in pulmonary pathology guide you from a histological pattern, through the appropriate work-up, around the pitfalls, and to the best diagnosis. Superb, full-color illustrations capture key pathological patterns for a full range of common and rare conditions, and a "visual index" at the beginning of the book directs you to the exact location of in-depth diagnostic guidance.

Virtually all sites in the human body can host lesions that simulate neoplasms, and many of these ""pseudotumors"" can simulate neoplasms on all levels of analysis-- clinical, radiologic, and pathologic-- thus they represent particular diagnostic pitfalls for the pathologist that can ultimately lead to therapeutic misdirection. This book provides the pathologist with detailed morphologic descriptions and diagnostic guidance in recognizing these neoplastic mimics as they occur in the skin. In addition, descriptions and diagnostic guidance are provided for the range of skin lesions that may mimi

""Neoplastic Mimics in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Pathology"" provides the pathologist with detailed morphologic descriptions and diagnostic guidance in recognizing these neoplastic mimics as they occur in thoracic and cardiovascular pathology. In addition, descriptions and diagnostic guidance are provided for the range of lesions in these areas that may mimic benign masses but are in fact neoplastic. Imaging and clinical correlations are emphasized throughout to support the pathologist as consultant to the diagnostic and clinical management team. This analysis of diagnostic mimics guides the
