This innovative book presents the vast historical sweep of engineering innovation and technological change to describe and illustrate engineering design and what conditions, events, cultural climates and personalities have brought it to its present state. Matthew Wells covers topics based on an examination of paradigm shifts, the contribution of individuals, important structures and influential disasters to show approaches to the modern concept of structure. By demonstrating the historical context of engineering, Wells has created a guide to design like no other, inspirational for both students and practitioners working in the fields of architecture and engineering

George Hudson: The Railway King is a comprehensive biography of George Hudson, a prominent figure in the development of England's railway system during the 19th century. Known as the 'Railway King', Hudson was instrumental in expanding England's railway lines, responsible for over 25% of the early railways, most of which remain operational. The book explores Hudson's rise to prominence during the railway boom of the 1840s and his subsequent fall from grace following unethical business practices and the collapse of the Railway Mania. Author Matthew Wells examines Hudson's life and career against the backdrop of the economic and social conditions of his time, presenting a balanced view by considering Hudson's own explanations alongside the criticisms he faced. The biography aims to offer a nuanced understanding of Hudson's impact on the railway industry and his legacy, appealing to readers interested in industrial history and the complexities of historical figures.

"When architects visit a building, and want to record or identify what they see, they take out a bundle of folded sheets in search of a blank piece of paper. These sheets may be ground plans, diagrams, sketches and ordnance maps. In one way or another, all are survey drawings, operating as both documentation and analysis, enabling an architect to examine certain conditions of the built environment, whether geometric, relational, material or technical. This book explores the history of the survey and its multiple forms in order to understand how the methods of recording what already exists can also be used to imagine what might be. Lavishly illustrated, with works from the collection of Drawing Matter and beyond, it addresses the multiple forms of the survey through focused studies - on John Soane, C R Cockerell, Viollet-le-Duc, Detmar Blow and Peter Märkli - alongside an extensive section of plates with commentaries by contemporary architects. In doing so, it maintains that while all surveys begin with the site, the outcomes are as idiosyncratic as their authors ? and their methods have much to offer as tools in design practice."--Publisher's description.

This two-volume publication introduces readers to one of the largest private collections of architectural drawings in the world. Showcasing drawings and related models and artefacts dating from 1691 to the mid 20th century, this lavish set includes both an illustrated catalogue and new texts by leading authorities, and provides a fascinating look at these often very beautiful, but sometimes neglected, by-products of architectural training and practice. The collection has been assembled over 30 years by investor and philanthropist Peter W. May, and includes more than 600 sheets that have all been carefully preserved and handsomely framed. This publication introduces amateurs and specialists alike to this largely unknown collection of materials that have been collected off-and-on through history by individuals and institutions. Works include 19th- and early 20th-century competition or certification drawings by design students, plus presentation drawings for public commissions, reconstruction studies, or interior designs. The catalogue is arranged by category, consistent with the orientation of May's interest in specific building types such as commercial or cultural institutions, train stations and spas, landmarks and monuments, private and royal residences, and cast-iron architecture. Also represented is a category for landscape designs and garden architecture, reflecting May's experience as a gentleman farmer with a predilection for building
