Abstract

Proceedings of the Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2002 Conference, held in San Diego, California, February 24-27, 2002. Sponsored by the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Coastal States Organization; American Association of State Flood Plain Managers. This collection contains 85 papers presenting state-of-the-art information on coastal storms, seismic events, impacts of climate change, and shoreline change. Topics include: Causes: the research and study of forces and processes that cause or contribute to coastal disasters; Response Mitigation Strategies: the development of methods and strategies to prevent or decrease the adverse effects of coastal disasters; Design and Engineering: detailed examination of engineering approaches to coastal hazards and mitigation, and the consequences of these approaches; and Coastal Management: the policies, planning, and management efforts to minimize or avert coastal disasters.

Abstract

Proceedings of the Tsunami section of the Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2008 conference, held in Turtle Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, April 13-16, 2008. Sponsored by the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration; U.S. Geological Survey. This collection contains 24 papers discussing the most current research on tsunamis, including planning and preparedness, field and experimental studies and building design, numerical modeling, tsunami deposits, risk assessment and mitigation. Along with the companion volume, Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2008, this collection will be essential to engineers, managers, planners, scientists, geologists, economists, oceanographers, and meteorologists working in the coastal zone.

Abstract

Proceedings of the Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2005 Conference, held in Charleston, South Carolina, May 8-11, 2005. Sponsored by the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute of ASCE; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This collection contains 80 papers focusing on the science and research tools, management procedures, and solutions that are explored and used during coastal disasters. Including coastal disaster events occurring through November 2004, papers discuss hazards on U.S. coastlines of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, as well as Lake Ontario (Canada), the North Sea (Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom), the Pacific Ocean (California, Hawaii, Korea, Japan, and New Zealand), and the Indian Ocean (Bangladesh, India). Topics include: coastal management, coastal storms, impacts of climate change, shoreline change and response, tsunamis and seismic events, and wind.
