Abstract

Hello and welcome to Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst: the New Workflow. I've written this book to guide you through the process of deciding how to tackle a new project. As you probably know, developing a Rich Internet Application is not always an easy task to do. There are several aspects to keep in mind. One of the key aspects is the project workflow. Not every application will have the same workflow applied to it during its creation. A lot of it depends on the size of the project, whether or not you need to connect your application to some kind of back end technology, how many people you are working with and, let's not forget this one, how the application is designed. If you have been developing RIAs in the past you are likely to have spoken unspeakable words when receiving the final design for the application from the designer on your team, especially if the designer is not familiar with the capabilities and limits of the technology that is used for actually developing the application. Or maybe you had to redo a couple of days work because of some minor design changes. You will no doubt have had a couple of frustrating moments in your life due to these kinds of problems.

Abstract

Persistence is an important set of techniques and technologies for accessing and transacting data, and ensuring that data is mobile regardless of specific applications and contexts. In Java development, persistence is a key factor in enterprise, e-commerce, and other transaction-oriented applications. Today, the Spring framework is the leading out-of-the-box solution for enterprise Java developers; in it, you can find a number of Java Persistence solutions. This book gets you rolling with fundamental Spring Framework 3 concepts and integrating persistence functionality into enterprise Java applications using Hibernate, the Java Persistence API (JPA) 2, and the Grails Object Relational Mapping tool, GORM. Covers core Hibernate fundamentals, demonstrating how the framework can be best utilized within a Spring application context Covers how to use and integrate JPA 2, found in the new Java EE 6 platform Covers how to integrate and use the new Grails persistence engine, GORM

Abstract

Many systems administrators on the Mac need a way to manage machine configuration after initial setup and deployment. Apple's Managed Preferences system (also known as MCX) is under-documented, often misunderstood, and sometimes outright unknown by systems administrators. MCX is usually deployed in conjunction with an OS X server, but it can also be used in Windows environments or where no dedicated server exists at all. Enterprise Mac Managed Preferences is the definitive guide to Apple's Managed Client technology. With this book, you'll get the following: An example-driven guide to Mac OS X Managed Preferences/Client technology Recipes for common use case studies and patterns A targeted approach appropriate for any sys admin that manages Macs in an OS X or Windows environment This is the only book that focuses on this facet of OS X exclusively. If you're a sys admin, this book will take away much of the pain of working with OS X client systems. Even better, both of the authors are very involved in the Mac community Greg Neagle is part of the MacEnterprise steering committee, and Ed Marczak is the executive editor and an author for MacTech magazine and a member of the Apple Consultants Network.

Abstract

Introduction ASP.NET is Microsoft's platform for developing web applications. Using ASP.NET, you can create- commerce shops, data-driven portal sites, and just about anything else you can find on the Internet. Best of all, you don't need to paste together a jumble of HTML and script code in order to program the Web. Instead, you can create full-scale web applications using nothing but code and a design tool such as Visual Studio 2008. The cost of all this innovation is the learning curve. To master ASP.NET, you need to learn how to use an advanced design tool (Visual Studio), a toolkit of objects (the .NET Framework), and an obje- oriented programming language (such as C# 2010). Taken together, these topics provide more than enough to overwhelm any first-time web developer. Beginning ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010 assumes you want to master ASP.NET, starting from the basics. Using this book, you'll build your knowledge until you understand the concepts, techniques, and best practices for writing sophisticated web applications. The journey is long, but it's also satisfying. At the end of the day, you'll find that ASP.NET allows you to tackle challenges that are simply out of reach on many other platforms. About This Book This book explores ASP.NET, which is a core part of Microsoft's .NET Framework. The .NET Framework is not a single application it's actually a collection of technologies bundled into one marketing term.

Abstract

Acknowledgments I wouldn't have even started this project if not for the endless encouragement from my lovely wife, Angel. She's been my sounding board, my task manager, my copy editor and my own personal cheerleader. There's no way I could do anything like this without her help and support. I'd also like to thank my technical reviewer, George, for everything he's done to help me out. He's gone above and beyond the limits of his role, helping with everything from code to grammar and even a good bit of style. After enjoying his help on Pro Django, I wouldn't have even signed on for another book without him by my side. Lastly, I never would've considered a book like this if not for the wonderful community around Python. The willingness of Python programmers to open their minds and their code is, I believe, unrivaled among our peers. It's this spirit of openness that encourages me every day, leading me to discover new things and push myself beyond the limits of what I knew yesterday. We learn by doing and by seeing what others have done. I hope that you'll take the contents of this book and do more with it than what I've done. There's no better reward for all this hard work than to see better programmers writing better code.
