The oldest dated Slavic inscriptions, 10th-13th centuries. The book contains a collection of 64 oldest dated inscriptions from the area of the Southern and Eastern Slavdom. The majority of these inscriptions are in the Cyrillic, the earliest of which comes from the year 921, and the latest from 1285. There is also contained in this collection one extensive inscription in the Glagolitic alphabet. In the Southern Slavic epigraphic material the tombstone, foundation and inscriptions commemorating the deeds and acts of rulers prevail. On the other hand, among the Eastern Slavic inscriptions numerous are the so called graffiti uncovered on the walls of temples in the Novgorod and in Kiev as well as inscriptions on crucifixes, stones and other objects. They are an important source for the study of the history of the Slavic language and writing.
