Das Individuum der Renaissance zeichnet sich nicht durch Unverwechselbarkeit, sondern durch Vergleichbarkeit aus.Seit Jacob Burckhardt im Jahr 1860 sein Buch über die ›Kultur der Renaissance in Italien‹ veröffentlichte, gilt die Epoche als Geburtsstunde des autonomen und unverwechselbaren Individuums. Dem gegenüber steht die Beobachtung, dass die Renaissance ein besonderes Interesse für das Messen und Vergleichen entwickelte, das in den Schriften von Nicolaus Cusanus zu einem philosophisch-theologischen System zusammengefasst wurde. Unter ihrem Einfluss konnte sich das relationale Denken im Verlauf des 15. Jahrhunderts in Europa in allen Bereichen des kulturellen Schaffens durchsetzen.
