This book intends to serve as a basis for presenting to young and experienced scientists the latest advances in VLSI technology and related areas, and how they can be effectively employed for the design of modern systems. All contributions to the book have been carefully written, focusing on the pedagogical aspect so as to become a relevant teaching material. Therefore, this book addresses in particular students, postgraduate programmers/engineers or anyone interested in learning about the state-of-the-art technology in: Architecture - Level Design Solutions Embedded System Design Emerging Devices and Nanocomputing Reconfigurable Systems The book attempts to encompass both theory and technology, and both theoretical and practical design aspects. The authors present the latest research results, ideas, developments, and applications in the above areas that directly influence and become influenced by VLSI circuits, systems and design methods to system level design and Systems-on-Chip. The book includes twenty chapters, divided in four parts. Part I, presents Architecture - Level Design Solutions and especially network-on-chip technologies, cryptographic hardware engineering, multi-core architectures and architectures beyond CMOS; Part II, entitled Embedded System Design, presents novel approaches for designing the next generation of embedded systems focusing on MPSoC and multi-core technologies; Part III is devoted to Emerging Devices and Nanocomputing and presents techniques for efficiently designing and simulating memory systems and converters with low power testing techniques, while it also provides the latest technology on digital microfluidic biochips; Finally, Part IV presents state-of-the-art technologies for Reconfigurable Systems based on FPGA technology and multi-grained reconfigurable hardware.

System Level Design of Reconfigurable Systems-on-Chip provides insight in the challenges and difficulties encountered during the design of reconfigurable Systems-on-Chip (SoCs). Reconfiguration is becoming an important part of System-on-Chip design to cope with the increasing demands for simultaneous flexibility and computational power. The book focuses on system level design issues for reconfigurable SoCs, and provides information on reconfiguration aspects of complex SoCs and how they can be implemented in practice. It is divided in three parts. The first part provides background information and requirements on reconfigurable technologies and systems. The second one identifies existing methodological gaps, and introduces a design flow for developing reconfigurable Systems-on-Chip. The high level part of the design flow can be covered by two C++ based methodologies: one based on SystemC and one based on OCAPI-XL, both including appropriate extensions to handle reconfiguration issues. Finally, the third part of the book presents reconfigurable SoCs from the perspective of the designer, through three indicative case studies from the wireless and multimedia communication domain.

This book introduces a new cyberphysical system that combines clinical and basic neuroscience research with advanced data analysis and medical management tools for developing novel applications for the management of epilepsy. The authors describe the algorithms and architectures needed to provide ambulatory, diagnostic and long-term monitoring services, through multi parametric data collection. Readers will see how to achieve in-hospital quality standards, addressing conventional “routine” clinic-based service purposes, at reduced cost, enhanced capability, and increased geographical availability. The cyberphysical system described in this book is flexible, can be optimized for each patient, and is demonstrated in several case studies.

Dynamic System Reconfiguration in Heterogeneous Platforms defines the MORPHEUS platform that can join the performance density advantage of reconfigurable technologies and the easy control capabilities of general purpose processors. It consists of a System-on-Chip made of a scalable system infrastructure hosting heterogeneous reconfigurable accelerators, providing dynamic reconfiguration capabilities and data-stream management capabilities. Moreover a toolset which offers a software-oriented approach for implementing data intensive applications on the chip is presented. The toolset provides application design process based on high level programming languages as much as possible. Various applications from different domains have been selected to drive the development of the project in assessing the MORPHEUS concept about its computing performance, utilization flexibility and productivity. The emerging IEEE 802.16j standard for Mobile Broadband Wireless Access systems is the base for a first type of applications. The second application is in the area of telecommunication networks which requires data rates up to 40 Gbit/s per single line. A third application is about huge digital postprocessing of the films captured by digital camera or film scanners in resolutions up to 4K. The fourth application is about image processing for intelligent cameras. .
