This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excavations on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author’s study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar’s conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of fundamental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age.

The book compiles a portion of the contributions presented during the symposium “Urbanisation, commerce, subsistence and production during the third millennium BC on the Iranian Plateau”, which took place at the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée in Lyon, the 29-30 of April, 2014. The twenty papers assembled provide an overview of the recent archaeological research on this region of the Middle East during the Bronze Age. The socio-economic transformation from rural villages to towns and nations has prompted many questions into this evolution of urbanisation. What was the impact of interactions between cultures in the Iranian Plateau and the surrounding regions (Mesopotamia, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Indus Valley)? What was the overall context during the Bronze Age on the Iranian Plateau? What was the extent and means of the expansion of the Kuro-Araxe culture? How did the Elamite Kingdom become established? What new knowledge has been contributed by the recent excavations and studies undertaken in the east of Iran? What was the influence of the Indus Valley culture, known as an epicentre of urbanisation in South Asia? What are the unique characteristics of the ancient cultures in Iran? While the urbanisation of early Mesopotamia has been the subject of much debate for several decades, this topic has only recently been raised in respect to the Iranian Plateau. This volume is the product of an international community from Iranian, European, and American institutions, consisting of recognised specialists in the archaeology of the Iranian Bronze Age. It provides an overview of the latest research, including abundant results from current on-going excavations. The current state of archaeological research in Iran, comprising many dynamic questions and perspectives, is presented here in the form of original contributions on the first emergence of towns in the Near and Middle East.

Akh Purattim, or "the banks of the Euphrates", is one of the expressions used m the 18th century BC to designate the kingdom of Mari, which extended from the confluence of the Khabur to the glacial cross cliff of Baghuz, today the Syrian-Iraqi border. The series thus named, defined by its subtitle "Mémoires d'archéologie et d'histoire régionales interdisciplinaires", is intended to become the meeting point for historical, archaeological, epi'graphic and archaeometric research on. the region, with priority given to the work conducted by the various missions, French (Man, Terqa for instance) as well as foreign, in particular the publication of their preliminary reports. But the title can. also include a larger geographic area and cover studies which are concerned as widely as possible with the role of this confluence in Syro-Mesopotamian history throughout Antiquity.

The 34 articles published in this volume form the proceedings of the 9th Red Sea conference held at Lyon in July 2019, whose core topic was the “spatiality of networks in the Red Sea”, including the western Indian Ocean. In the networked space that the Erythra Thalassa never ceased to be, stable factors such as landscape, climate, and wind patterns have been constantly entangled with more dynamic elements, such as human activity. The contributors to this volume explored how the former were integrated into the countless networks formed by humans in the region, and how these were impacted by spatial constraints over the long course of history. This volume offers a wide range of stimulating contributions. The first articles are devoted to medieval and modern European sources on the Red Sea and its exploration, and to the networks of knowledge dissemination about the region. They are followed by papers relating to the main nodes, the ports and islands of the Red Sea. Several articles are then focusing on the agency of hinterland populations in the networks, and the relationships between the regions bordering the Red Sea and central powers that governed them, often from distant lands. Production and consumption networks are the subject of the next articles, to assess the extent and nature of exchanges and to shed light on the archaeology of circulations. The logistics of exploration, exploitation and trade in the regions bordering the Red Sea are then examined. The last series of papers focuses on regions where archaeological work started only recently: Somaliland, Tigray, and the Horn of Africa. Thanks to all the participants, whether they have exploited new data or re‑examined long-known material, the 9th edition of the “Red Sea Project” gave rise to vibrant debates, showing that the Erythra Thalassa remains an endless source of knowledge.
