Abstract

Beneden de kritische temperatuur (Tc) slagen supergeleidende materialen erin elektrische stroom weerstandloos te geleiden zonder energieverlies. Economisch gezien is dit zeer voordelig! De vraag naar supergeleidende toepassingen is dan ook logisch. Hoge temperatuur supergeleiders zijn omwille van hun keramisch karakter zeer broos en hard waardoor ze mechanisch moeilijk te verwerken zijn. Om dit probleem op te lossen wordt gebruikt gemaakt van "coated conductors". Een dunne georiënteerde film van het supergeleidende materiaal wordt hierbij op een substraat met gewenste eigenschappen afgezet. De huidige technieken om deze coated conductors te vervaardigen, maken meestal gebruik van hoog-vaccuüm en vereisen dure en ingewikkelde apparatuur. Onderzoek naar een alternatieve techniek kon dan ook niet uitblijven. Dit werk kadert in de zoektocht naar een alternatieve manier om "coated conductors" te vervaardigen. Uitgaande van een sol-gel precursor gebaseerd op metaalacetaten, azijnzuur en triethanolamine werd op laboschaal de depositie van een supergeleidende dunne YBa2Cu3O7-d film op strontiumtitanaat als substraat onderzocht. De depositie gebeurde hierbij met de "dipcoating"techniek. Uit de verworven resultaten kon geconcludeerd worden dat, ten gevolge van een zuurstoftekort de transitie in de gewenste supergeleidende fase onvolledig was. Ter realisatie van een goede supergeleidende film werden finaal nog enkele oplossingen naar voren geschoven die in de toekomst nog uitgetest kunnen worden. Below the critical temperature (Tc) superconducting materials manage to transport electric flow without losing energy: the electric capacitance is zero. From economic point of view is this very advantageous what endorses the question to superconducting applications. One of the disadvantages of high temperature superconductors is that they are very frail and hard as a result of their ceramic character. Therefore the mechanical process of those materials is known to be very difficult. The solution to this problem is what we call the coated conductor. On a suitable substrate thin orientated films of superconducting material are deposited. Current techniques to manufacture these coated conductors require very expensive and wrapped apparatus in high vacuum conditions. Research for an alternative technique could not stay away. The head aim of this work exists in a search to an alternative technique to manufacture these coated conductors on a economic justified manner. Therefore a sol-gel precursor based on metal acetates, acetic acid and triethanolamine was used to deposit a superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d film on strontium titanate. The deposition was obtained by dipcoating the sol-gel precursor onto the substrate. Research showed that the transition into the desired superconducting phase was incomplete as a result of deficiency of oxygen. To realise a good superconducting film in the near future, some solutions were introduced at the end.

Abstract

Steel is a versatile material for constructions but it is very susceptible to corrosion. In order to protect the steel, it can be coated with aluminum which has a low electrochemical potential and thus will be oxidized preferentially.A well known technique to aluminize steel is the hot-dipping process in a bath with melted aluminum or an alloy of aluminum. Because of a mutual atomic interdiffusion of the steel and the smelted components, an intermetallic layer is formed all over the surface of the dipped steel. After removing the sample out of the bath a coating with the same composition of the melt is formed on top of the steel. An intermetallic layer of Fe-Al is formed between the steel and the coating from which the composition is also determined by the composition of the smelt.The aim of this thesis is to analyze the influences of the dip time, the temperature of the bath and the concentration of silicon in the bath on the thickness and the morphology of the coating. Adding alloying elements has effect on the formation of the intermetallic layer. This intermetallic layer is the most critical zone in the aluminized steel. For that reason, it is important to reduce the thickness of the intermetallic layer or to remove this layer completely. This action reduces not only the thickness of the coating but also minimizes the friability of the coating.For the composition of the bath, it could be chosen out of three compositions: Al-1wt% Si, Al-3wt% Si en Al-10wt% Si. The temperature of the bath lies in a range of 680-740°C and the dip times that had been used were 3s, 60s en 300s.After the hot-dipping process in the Rhesca Hot Dip Simulator, the coated sample has been prepared in a metallographic way. The cross sections of each coated sample had been examined with the SEM in order to analyze the results of the hot-dipping process. Abstract

Televic create in theirdivisionRail passenger information systems for trains. In theproduction area they daily perform quality checks on their systems. Thoseresults are saved in a MYSQL-database. The results describeif the test was successful and if its meet Televic requirements.The results aren’t used in the most effective way. For instance,Televic can’t easily see if theirtestsare going well. With our system we created a way so it’s easy for Televic employees to see if theirtestsare going well. If a test continues to fail Televic can prevent further fails, so they can easily find asolution.We started our thesis with al lot of research, we wanted to find a perfect dashboard framework to work with. But after a few days we concludedthat we better start programming our own dashboard. At our school we learned to work with React, a JavaScript library created by Facebook. The main use of React is creating user interfaces, so this was a perfect fit for us. Our system is mostly developedin JavaScript. So,using React was a logic choice. Auser will see the React website,and in the background an Express server will do all the calculations.With our system wehope Televic can continue to improve their systems and so make it easy the deliver information to the train passengers.
