As an art history student, Caro Verbeek came into contact with an enormous variety of beautiful noses: large and small, straight and curved, flat and pointed. In many portraits, striking examples turned out to have been further enhanced by the artist. Although today's ideal of beauty suggests otherwise, in the past a large nose was seen as an indicator of intellect, courage, character and status. For example, Dante's death mask was manipulated to give him a real 'poet's nose', the depiction of Cleopatra's eagle nose was a political strategy and the Renaissance poet Annibale Caro even wrote the eulogy 'Nasea' about the considerable nose. In 'A small cultural history of the (big) nose', Verbeek takes the reader on a journey along notable noses in Western art and culture, from Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Gogol to Barbie, Barbara Streisand and #sideprofileselfie. Caro Verbeek shows how much our aesthetic judgment depends on cultural circumstances of which we are often barely aware. But above all, it is an ode to the nose, in all its shapes and dimensions. Caro Verbeek (1980) is an internationally renowned art historian and scent scientist. She teaches at the VU Amsterdam, where she obtained her doctorate in 2021 on art historical scents. She is involved in the EU research program ODEUROPA, and since June 2021 she has been working as a curator at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag Als student kunstgeschiedenis kwam Caro Verbeek in aanraking met een enorme variëteit aan prachtige neuzen: groot en klein, recht en gebogen, plat en puntig. In veel portretten bleken markante exemplaren nog eens extra te zijn aangezet door de kunstenaar. Hoewel het hedendaagse schoonheidsideaal anders doet vermoeden, werd een grote neus in het verleden gezien als een indicator van intellect, moed, karakter en status. Zo werd het dodenmasker van Dante gemanipuleerd om hem een echte 'dichtersneus' te geven, was de beeltenis van Cleopatra's adelaarsneus een politieke strategie en schreef de renaissancedichter Annibale Caro zelfs het lofdicht 'Nasea' over de aanzienlijke neus. 0In 'Een kleine cultuurgeschiedenis van de (grote) neus' neemt Verbeek de lezer mee op een reis langs opvallende neuzen in de westerse kunst en cultuur, van Michelangelo, Rembrandt en Gogol tot Barbie, Barbara Streisand en #sideprofileselfie. Caro Verbeek laat zien hoezeer ons esthetische oordeel afhangt van culturele omstandigheden waarvan we ons vaak nauwelijks bewust zijn. "Fleeting - Scents in Colour explores odours and the sense of smell as portrayed in Dutch and Flemish art of the seventeenth century - from fragrant flowers and perfumes to body odours and stinking canals. It is about the sensory role played by smells in daily life, about odours and health, about spices and other scents from far-off lands, and about lost 'smellscapes' of the past. But how were odours and the sense of smell portrayed? What meanings were attached to smells and what did they call to mind? Can the life of those times be captured in smells? We are surrounded by countless odours that vanish over time yet exert a strong (often subconscious) infleunce on our emotions. There are just as many stories to be told about the invisible and intangible phenomenon of smell as there are about art.
