This volume offers key insights into the crisis of legitimization that music as a subject of arts education seems to be in. Music as an educational subject is under intense pressure, both economically, due to the reduction of education budgets, as well as due to a loss of status with policy makers. The contributions in this book illuminate Martin Heidegger’s thinking as a highly cogent theoretical framework for understanding the nature and depth of this crisis. The contributors explore from various angles the relationship between the pressure on music education and the foundations of our technical and rationalized modern society, and lead the way on the indispensable first steps towards reconnecting the cultural practices of education with music and its valuable contributions to personal development.

"To pursue the philosophy of music is to contemplate music's nature, essence, purpose, value, and function in our lives. While the aesthetics of music looks at music's content, quality, meaning and importance, music philosophy often goes one step further. Ideas about something one perhaps believes is 'purely aesthetical' will of course always require consideration in relation to ideas about humanity, the world, politics and religion. In this sense, music aesthetics and music philosophy are two sides of the same coin. This is reflected in the texts presented in this collection, which provides a broad view of the current state of ideas about music in Norway. The authors, from PhD fellows to emeriti, represent different higher educational music institutions in Norway as well as different fields within music and philosophy. Their texts are on topics ranging from musical experience, music and language, meaning and interpretation of music, music and view of life, and others. The anthology's editors Øivind Varkøy and Henrik Holm are, respectively, professor of music education and director of the PhD program at the Norwegian Academy of Music and adjunct professor of music at Oslo Metropolitan University, and professor of philosophy and head of research at Rudolf Steiner University College in Oslo."

Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion.We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? And is there any direct route from religion into music as an acoustic phenomenon? Without a religious interpretation of the music remaining? There is a wealth of research about music and religion, but little on how they meet. That is what this anthology seeks to remedy.Music and Religion will be relevant for anyone with an interest in encounters between these two phenomena.
