The Vance family story begins hopefully in post-war America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love," and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility. A deeply moving memoir with its share of humour and vividly colourful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.

Hillbilly blues biedt een ongegeneerde en genereuze blik in het hart van blank en arm Amerika. Hoe komt het toch dat de blanke arbeidersklasse in de Verenigde Staten op minder dan één generatie tijd is overgestapt van de Democraten naar de Republikeinen en voluit heeft gestemd voor de politieke outsider Donald Trump? Die vraag blijkt bijzonder complex. In Hillbilly blues geeft de auteur een gelaagd en erg persoonlijk antwoord. Vance groeide op tussen Kentucky en Ohio, staten die mijnbouw en industrie verloren, en er onder meer een dramatische drugsepidemie, gebroken gezinnen en huiselijk geweld voor in de plaats kregen. De auteur laat ongegeneerd in zijn hart kijken, en in de vaak tragische lotgevallen van zijn verknipte familie.
