Abstract

Wim van Hooff (Netherlands, 1918-2002) was one of the most outspoken and leading color consultants of the second half of the twentieth century. Coming from the painter’s craft, he developed his own vision on the use of color in architecture and the built environment. With his extensive oeuvre of around two thousand projects, he was decisive for the subdued color palette that mainly characterizes the architecture of the Bossche School, a unique movement in Dutch architecture. His balanced color ensembles are still used today in historic and contemporary urban settings. Moreover, he left his mark in the post-war restoration and austerity of more than a hundred church buildings. The iconic buildings of the Bossche School have now been given a protected status and in-depth knowledge of the use of color is indispensable for their maintenance, restoration and climate proofing. This lavishly illustrated publication analyzes Van Hooff’s vision and theory of color and its application through his work in buildings, cities and church restorations. There is also an extensive overview of his decorative and free work and an appendix with his most important projects. This book thus contributes to opening up this exceptional heritage.
