Abstract

Abstract

The past several decades have witnessed thousands of studies into children and the media. Yet, much academic research is still in its infancy when it comes to our knowledge about the uses, preferences, and effects of different media. This distinctive volume moves the field forward in this regard, with its insights into the latest theories and research on children and the media. Author Patti M. Valkenburg explores ""screen"" media (i.e., television, films, video and computer games, and the Internet), and focuses her study on the most fundamental topics in the study of children and the media.

Abstract

An illuminating study of the complex relationship between children and media in the digital age Now, as never before, young people are surrounded by media?thanks to the sophistication and portability of the technology that puts it literally in the palms of their hands. Drawing on data and empirical research that cross many fields and continents, authors Valkenburg and Piotrowski examine the role of media in the lives of children from birth through adolescence, addressing the complex issues of how media affect the young and what adults can do to encourage responsible use in an age of selfies, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This important study looks at both the sunny and the dark side of media use by today?s youth, including why and how their preferences change throughout childhood, whether digital gaming is harmful or helpful, the effects of placing tablets and smartphones in the hands of toddlers, the susceptibility of young people to online advertising, the legitimacy of parental concerns about media multitasking, and more.

Abstract

Summary Adolescents and the Internet: implications for home, school and social life Despite the widespread conjecture about the high levels of Internet penetration in Chilean society, when we began our research in November 2004 many things were unknown about the actual use and impact of the Internet especially among children and young people. Motivated by this lack of information we attempted to discover relevant facts associated with adolescents’ Internet practices. Above all, we wanted to get a deeper understanding of the social contexts where Internet activity takes place and also come to grips with the consequences of Internet use for young people’s construction of identity, social relationships and learning processes. Our study was carried out in 10 schools in Santiago and consisted of a survey and subsequent in-depth interviews. The survey was administered to 655 high school students aged between 14 and 19 years (mean 16.02; SD 1.21). Of this sample, 52% were female and 48% were male. Specifically, in the survey pupils were asked about their frequency of Internet use, the kinds of Internet applications and utilities mostly employed by them, their places of Internet access, etc. In the second phase of our data collection 32 daily and weekly Internet users were interviewed (16 boys and 16 girls). These interviews focused on the generation of data about the nature of the users’ Internet practices and perceptions, their motivations for using the Internet and their personal Internet histories. As we were able to demonstrate throughout our findings, adolescents use the Internet in a variety of places and for a variety of purposes. Nevertheless, there is a clear preponderance of Internet use at home. In its turn, home Internet access and use have clear implications for frequency of use and expertise. Not surprisingly, Internet access and type of connection at home are positively correlated with frequency of Internet use so that the better the connection the more frequently the Internet is used. Moreover, Internet use at home is ruled by family agreements especially regarding times and frequency of use. Our research also revealed that adolescents’ main uses of the Internet are related to non-educational purposes such as chatting with friends, searching for information and downloading things. Using the Internet for these purposes has been shown to provide important social, cognitive and personal gratifications for adolescents. Regarding the main motivations for why adolescents go on-line, we found out that ‘keeping in touch with people they know’, ‘meeting new people’, ‘accessing traditional media’, ‘downloading things’ and ‘obtaining information’ were their main motivations. As regards Internet skills, although adolescents claim to be the Internet experts at home, their degree of expertise is sometimes overestimated. Indeed, even though many teenagers are acquainted with the Internet and are able to perform several (simultaneous) tasks on-line, many of them still lack advanced Internet skills which demand more knowledge and experience. In general, boys perceive themselves as more skilled users than girls. However, in the case instant messaging (IM) practically no gender differences are observed. This may reveal a high level of confidence in the performance of IM-related tasks which may be explained by the high interest, and consequent high frequency of use of this application by both girls and boys. In relation to adolescents’ process of identity construction, our results show that the use of instant messaging, discussion groups and photolog provide adolescents with important opportunities to actively try out and attempt to construct a coherent, unified identity by means of social interaction and individual explorations of their self. Moreover,
