The general idea of social capital is that it helps people to achieve their goals in various domains of their life. Hence, the more social capital one can dispose of, the better. This idea is popular in many social science disciplinesin economics, sociology, and political science as well. The theory of social capital has received wide attention since the 1990s and is elaborated largely by rational choice and by sociologists who apply an instrumental perspective to social networks (e.g., Bourdieu, 1981; Coleman, 1988). The large number of publications on social capital indicates that the theory is influential, and the research is flourishing.
