Sustainable solutions require the integration of social and ecological aspects in every planning and decision-making process. This means: analyse the real world and model the problem-situation as a system; understand the needs and objectives of the customers and clients; carefully develop alternative ideas and solutions, as well as evaluate concepts under multidimensional aspects/criteria. In this area Systems Engineering could offer a fruitful approach. Systems Engineering (SE) is a systematic way of thinking and a methodology to guide demanding problem-solving processes in the fields of management and engineering. This book explains the most important principles and elements of Systems Engineering and three planning cases demonstrate the practical application.

A Fab Lab (short for fabrication laboratory) is simultaneously a workshop and a laboratory, equipped with computer-controlled tools like laser cutters, CNC milling machines and 3-D printers. A global network of Fab Labs gives teams and individuals access to digital high-tech fabrication technologies. The Fab Lab movement is founded on the groundbreaking idea of enabling alomst everybody to make almost everything, almost everywhere. The book opens with various authors sharing insight on topics including the emergence of Fab Labs, the philosophy behind them, and their commercial aspects, as well as the techniques, methods and processes used. Following this, a real-world example is presented, looking at the creative and technical processes of one project undertaken at Fablab Amsterdam. In the second half of the book, 27 noteworthy projects and products are featured in the Fab Gallery, demonstrating the full diversity of possibilities that Fab Labs offer.https://www.standaardboekhandel.be/p/fab-lab-9783721209655https://www.standaardboekhandel.be/p/fab-lab-9783721209655

Open Design Now looks at design in the new creative commons, co-creation era. It presents practices, tools, and licensing systems, as open design is a way of designing everyone can participate in. Includes essays, cases, and visuals on various issues of open design, as well as practical guidelines for designers, design educators, and policymakers to get started. Open Design Now covers these issues: Overview of Open Design: practices, tools, licensing systems As Open Design is a way of designing everyone can participate in, what are emerging practices that facilitate it? what are the tools, existing and needed, to make it happen (physical tools, digital tools, legal tools)? Underlying principles of Open Design: Networked tools for distributed physical production, the understanding of the commons as an elementary resource for cultural production, etc. Implications of Open Design: What effect does Open Design have on designing, artistic expression and creative processes? on the relationship of producer and consumer? on design business? on society at large?
