Abstract

Abstract

This grammar of Modern Eastern Armenian gives a precise and explicit description of the Eastern Armenian language of the Republic of Armenia. It covers not only the normative tradition but, more importantly, also describes the colloquial language as it is used in Armenia today. With regard to methodological approach and terminology it fully meets the demands of modern general linguistics and typology.

Abstract

The geographical region of the Southern Caucasus, the lowlands between the Black and the Caspian Sees and the Armenian and Anatolian highlands is located on the peripheries of Europe from Asia. This region shares a common pre-history, with pre-Christian and pre-Muslim cultures and beliefs. The later periods, however, starting from the pre-Christian Iranian dominations, followed by the Arab conquest and the later campaigns of Seljuks, Mongols and Ottomans, had a heavy impact on the development of the region’s various ethnic languages and cultures.Nevertheless, many similarities can be found in the languages, cultures and religious traditions of the people living in this region. Armenia has often been a bridge between various cultures. Even though Armenians have succeeded in preserving their original language and culture through the centuries, many of their traditions and myths, their linguistic peculiarities, particularly in Armenian dialects, may be explained by an often long-lasting influence of other cultures, be it occidental (Hellenistic/Roman, later Byzantine and Medieval European) or oriental (Iranian, later Arab, Turkic, Mongolian, etc.) or even Caucasian. The Armenians have also left many traces in the languages and cultures of the Occident, Orient and the Caucasus. This volume gives an impressive approach to an interdisciplinary view of the linguistic and cultural properties which Armenians share with their neighbours.

Abstract

"Monasticism is a vital feature of Christian spiritual life and has its origins in the Oriens Christianus. The present volume contains studies on Armenian Monasticism from various perspectives. The task is not only to produce historical studies. The aim is also to contribute to and reflect on monasticism today. Authors come from the Armenian Apostolic Catholicosate of Ejmiacin, the Holy See of Cilicia, the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and the Armenian-Catholic Church, as well as from the Benedictine and Franciscan Orders of the Catholic Church. The experts reflected on the glorious past of Armenian monasticism and agreed to evaluate future challenges ecumenically to give more insight into both past and present Armenian monasticism."

Abstract

Jos J.S. Weitenberg, Professor of Armenian Studies at Leiden University (1994-2009), co-founder and President of the Association Internationale des Études Arméniennes, was a scholar of global standing in Hittite, Armenian and Indo-European linguistics. The twenty-three studies by colleagues and former students gathered in this volume reflect some of the depth and breadth of Weitenberg?s scholarship: Hittite and Anatolian, to which Weitenberg made a classic contribution with 'Die hethitischen u-Stämme' (1984), and Indo-European etymologies. Armenian dialectology is well represented, as are contributions to wider Armenian culture, and the reception of Greek literary culture in Armenian. Further studies are devoted to digital preparation of critical editions, the relationship between master and pupil as well as the Armenian reception and interpretation of Biblical and apocryphal material, to which Weitenberg contributed in 'Eusèbe d'Émèse. Commentaire de la Genèse. Texte arménien de l'édition de Venise [1980]. Fragments grecs et syriaques. Avec traductions', together with Françoise Petit and Lucas Van Rompay (2011).
