Abstract

In recent years, Baumschlager Eberle architectural practice has successfully continued its international trajectory. Between 2010 and 2020, around 600 buildings, projects and competitions have been completed, including housing projects, hospitals, company headquarters, university campuses, and the 2226 building : an office building without heating system. The book documents in chronological order in the form of an annotated and commented catalogue of works all projects, competitions, and studies of these years. Over 50 completed buildings are comprehensively presented. 14 of the most important projects have an in-depth presentation: with images, plans, and other material as well as a detailed text. In addition, three essays and three interviews deal with the central issues of density, resources and open building.

Abstract

An ideal design is site-specific, which is the only way architecture can create or connect with a specific sense of identity. This requires addressing the structural and local circumstances. This method handbook offers a playful way in which to systematically ascertain a complex framework and use it for your own design. The "9 x 9 method" takes all relevant factors and their alternate interaction into consideration: location, structure, shell, program, and materiality, all which, in a matrix with various intersections, produce exactly 9 "fields of action" for the design. The individual "fields" are not only illustrated visually with meaningful and eidetic pictures, but are also discussed in texts by leading specialists. For this book, the "9 x 9 method" was completely re-worked and redesigned.
