The headquarters and museum of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation are a major work of architecture. The impact it has had and the way it has revealed the effectiveness of qualities, such as formal sobriety and contention have confirmed the magnificent articulation achieved between design and construction. Together with the garden, the complex has constructed the image of prestige and innovation of the Foundation itself. This book is the final product of research that began some years ago, on subject of these buildings and its relevance in affirming modern architecture.

Die Moderne ist der prägendste architektonische Ausdruck des 20. Jahrhunderts – eine Bewegung, die die gebaute Umwelt in beispielloser Weise verändert hat. Viele dieser Gebäude sind allerdings heute reparaturbedürftig oder ihre ursprüngliche Funktion ist obsolet geworden, sodass eine Umnutzung notwendig wird. Diese Publikation in Zusammenarbeit mit Docomomo untersucht Strategien zur Sanierung von Werken dieser Epoche. Expertinnen und Experten diskutieren die Herausforderungen bei der Erhaltung von Werken der Moderne. Anhand von 24 herausragenden Beispielen werden verschiedene Restaurierungsansätze vorgestellt. Dazu gehören unbekannte Trouvaillen wie die Calouste-Gulbenkian-Stiftung in Lissabon oder das Wohnhaus, das Juan O'Gorman fur seinen Vater in Mexiko gebaut hat – Eingriffe, die die Authentizität der Architektur respektieren. Modernism is the most defining architectural expression of the 20th century – a movement that transformed built environments around the world in an unprecedented way. Many of these buildings are in need of repair now or their original function is no longer needed. This publication in cooperation with Docomomo explores strategies of rehabilitating works of this era. Architects and art historians discuss challenges in the preservation of Modernist buildings. 24 best-practice examples are highlighted, illustrating various approaches to restoration. Among them, there are unknown gems such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon or the stunning house that Juan O’Gorman built for his father in Mexico – interventions guided by respect for the authenticity of the architecture and based on substantial research.
