Reality Bytes is a collection of essays by Bart Lootsma, written in the years from 1998 to 2009. "Byte" is a unit of digital information used in information technology and most commonly consists of eight bits. Reality Bytes is also the title of an essay by Bart Lootsma, in which he investigates the relationship between society and architects and town planners. Bart Lootsma, Professor of Architecture as well as architectural historian, critic and curator, is one of the most multi-faceted figures amongst contemporary architectural theorists. He has produced numerous publications, including "Superdutch", an appraisal of contemporary architecture in the Netherlands published in 2000. In Reality Bytes he has now for the first time compiled hitherto (mostly) unpublished texts on architectural theory, on Second Modernism, on populism and architecture, on landscape architecture and on the changing role of architects in society.

With the Republic of Slovenia declaring its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 Slovenia became an honourable member of the world of late capitalism, and in 2004 a member of the European Union. It would take too long to explain in detail why Slovenia became a successful member of the empire of late capitalism, but what can be said of architecture is that several young architects such as Spela Videcnik and Rok Oman of Ofis arhitekti became familiar with the blurring of the distinctions between art, fashion, high and low culture, design and politics, individualisation, and consumption. Not only Ofis, but other young architects oriented themselves to the West and decided early on in their careers to study architecture in post-Fordist countries like Great Britain, the USA, Holland and Finland, thus making the leap from a Communist welfare state into a late-capitalist state -with the help of their international aesthetics- easier and more promising for Slovenia. From that moment on, a new generation of architects paved the way for Slovenia to move into world capitalism. The work by Ofis compiled in this issue of 2G represents a good example of this new generation of architects from Eastern Europe.

Architecture in Effect' is a substantial collection of essays emerging from the Swedish research environment of the same name. While it takes its point of departure from within the specific context that is Sweden, it includes contributions from authors based in the Nordic context, in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. A central premise of the collected research is that the built environment and societal norms are co-constitutive and that architecture as a discipline and as a professional practice plays a fundamental role in this relationship. Contemporary political and environmental conditions place specific demands on society and on the everyday life of individuals. There persists, as such, an obligation for actors within the discipline of architecture to contribute to a rethinking of the situated knowledges within architecture by engaging in trans-, cross-, and inter-disciplinary studies. Architectural researchers have the capacity to guide and criticize thinking on architecture and its vital material relations amidst existing and emerging societies.

This book is about the power of thought in architecture. Without the keen conceptual thinking of renowned Dutch architect Wiel Arets, buildings such as the Academy for Arts Maastricht, Hedge House, the University Library Utrecht, the Jellyfish House, the Four Towers in Osdorp and the Allianz Headquarters would not be the outstanding examples of contemporary architecture they are widely acknowledged to be. Arets--who has taught at the AA London, Columbia University and Cooper Union in New York and the Universität der Künste Berlin, and who has served as Dean of the Berlage Institute Rotterdam--believes that research and education are an intrinsic part of being an architect. Here, in dialogue with such authors as Stan Allen, Alberto Alessi, Geert Bekaert, Kenneth Frampton, Jacques Herzog, Hans Ibelings, Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhaas, Arthur Kroker, Bart Lootsma, Greg Lynn, Joost Meuwissen, Dominique Perrault, Kazuyo Sejima, Roemer van Toorn and Anthony Vidler, Arets discusses his work, accompanied by Jan Bitter's photographs of his buildings and a timeline of built works. Best Dutch Book Design 2010.
