Abstract

A collection of papers presented at the Sixth International Conference on Tall Buildings (ICTB), this volume clearly explains the engineering and socio-economic aspects of tall buildings in specific areas of sustainability. The papers focus on Asian cities, where tall buildings have become a major feature of the built environment. A multi-disciplinary book, it also deals with the increasing complexity of inter-related problems that require knowledge integration from different disciplines. With interesting contributions from distinguished practitioners, academics and policy makers, the book add

Abstract

Proceedings of sessions of the GeoShanghai Conference, held in Shanghai, China, June 6-8, 2006. Hosted by Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering, China. In cooperation with the Geo-Institute of ASCE; Georgia Institute of Technology; and University of Kansas. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains over 40 technical papers that address issues ranging from the micro-characterization of processes to the in situ evaluation of engineering properties of soils. This book is divided into four main sections, with all of the papers addressing one of the greatest challenges in geotechnical engineering research and practice: the evaluation of geomaterial properties with minimal to no disturbance states. The first section includes the general theme paper by James K. Mitchell, University Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, who focuses on the study of physico-chemical behavior of soils, soil improvement and geomaterial characterization. The second section is devoted to recognizing the services of Dr. Mehmet T. Tumay, Georgia Gulf Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Louisiana State University, for his immense contribution to research and practice in geotechnical engineering. The third section covers non-destructive evaluation and geophysical testing to address soil characterization problems relevant to foundation exploration, geoenvironmental evaluation and earthquake related topics. Finally, the fourth section contains other in situ testing methods that deal with the analysis of field data and interpretation of soil properties, as well as simulation of in situ testing using numerical methods.

This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 65 international papers and represents the latest advances in the static and dynamic behavior of soils and rocks, including constitutive modeling and numerical methods. The book begins with two keynote articles that discuss soil constitutive modeling. The first section of the book discusses theoretical concepts and experimental procedures of soil behavior and laboratory testing. The second section's papers span from advanced concepts in rock mechanics to the interactions in constructed facilities. It also includes numerical applications of problems in rocks. The third section focuses on modeling soil behavior, with many of the papers using field and laboratory experimental data to verify their findings. Finally, the fourth section discusses the latest advances in soil and soil structure interactions under dynamic excitation. It contains results from work using shaking tables, wave induced loading, vibrations and numerical simulations.

Abstract

Proceedings of sessions of the GeoShanghai Conference, held in Shanghai, China, June 6-8, 2006. Hosted by Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering, China. In cooperation with the Geo-Institute of ASCE; Georgia Institute of Technology; the University of Kansas; the University of Tennessee; International Association of Foundation Drilling; Deep Foundation Institute; Saga University; and Delft University of Technology. This Geotechnical Special Publications contains 42 papers on unsaturated soil mechanics and environmental geotechnics. Two papers focus on geoenvironmental engineering and unsaturated soil mechanics applied to field problems. Additional papers highlight unsaturated soil phenomena, coupled phenomena, and transport phenomena. The book showcases new experimental evidence and theoretical developments on strength and deformational behaviors of both expansive soil and collapsible loess, as well as some new testing techniques to characterize volumetric change and strength of these problematic soils. It reports on the latest understanding of various coupled phenomena in soils such as hydrobiological, hydromechanical, hydrothermal, thermal-mechanical and hydrochemical coupling. The papers also address the latest advances in geoenvironmental applications including the sustainability of landfills, removal of various contaminants from soils, soil-contaminant interactions, and soil stabilization.

This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 42 technical papers and represents the latest advances in research and practical applications in earth structures including slope stability, embankments and dams, and earth retaining walls. The book begins with two state-of-the-art papers on recent advances in three-dimensional slope stability analysis and geosynthetic-reinforced earth structures. The eighteen papers in the slope stability section present technologies for stabilization of slopes and landslides, monitoring of slope movement, and analysis of slope stability. The embankment and dam section contains thirteen papers focusing on performance of embankments and dams including deformation and bearing capacity, particularly on pile-supported embankments. Finally, the nine papers in the earth retaining wall section present analytical and numerical methods for different earth retaining wall systems, with a focus on lateral earth pressure and stability.
