Abstract

The conflict in South Ossetia in the summer of 2008 and the Ukrainian energy crisis in early 2009 served to highlight the tensions that continue to influence EU-Russia relations in regard to the region comprising the former republics of the Soviet Union or the 'shared neighbourhood'. This book draws together research which examines the objectives of EU and Russian foreign policy and the complexities of the security challenges in this region. Although both actors have a shared interest in cooperating to create conditions of peace and stability, we have in recent years observed the development of growing competition between the EU and Russian foreign policy agendas. This book was based on a special issue of Europe-Asia Studies.

Abstract

The Politics of the New Germany takes a new approach to understanding politics in post-unification Germany. Assuming only elementary knowledge, it focuses on debates and issues to portray Germany's key institutions and policies. Written in a straightforward style by a team of four experts, each of the chapters draws on a rich variety of real-world examples to illustrate its arguments. In doing so, it brings new relevance to topics such as Germany's foreign policy role and its social market economy, specifically for a student audience. The book also takes a birds-eye perspective of the big debates that define German politics over time, regardless of which party happens to be in power, and pinpoints three key themes of reconciliation, consensus and transformation. The book thus provides a comprehensive, yet still highly accessible overview to what drives politics in Europe's biggest nation state and therefore constitutes an ideal introduction to this vital country for students of politics and international relations, as well as of European and German Studies.
