Ce livre propose des regards diversifiés - par les genres d'écritures et par les interprétations données - sur les genèses, les formes et les processus d'identification du sport au Québec. L'histoire du sport est présentée inscrite dans la société québécoise comme une “histoire qui s'écrit et qui se dit”, c'est-à- dire dont la mise en récit a, en tant que telle, des effets de socialisation. Le hockey sur glace, qui apparaît à Montréal à la fin du xixe siècle, fournit un exemple emblématique de la dimension identitaire nationale du sport, qu'il soit de loisir ou de compétition.
