"Visionary cities" sets the agenda for the city of the future. This first publication in the "Future Cities Series" is intended as an overview of the issues that The Why Factory is addressing and to outline this research institute's ambitions and modus operandi for the coming years. In each of the book's chapters, whether about sustainability, the boom in the leisure industry or poverty, one encounters the tension between the disciplines of architecture and urbanism and the dynamics of the city itself. Each chapter is therefore a specific brief, an urgent call for visionary scenarios for the city of the future. In the concluding chapter Winy Maas advocates regarding the city first and foremost as a project for the future. Maas takes a critical standpoint vis-à-vis current urban planning practice. He argues that architecture possesses a visionary dimension that can generate new value of the city and advocates a large-scale communal agenda.

Addressing East Asia’s rapid urban transformation, The Vertical Village looks at radical alternatives to the familiar standardized block architecture that has eradicated low-rise, “lighter” varieties of architecture, such as the Hutong in Beijing, Tokyo’s wooden house and the villages of Singapore. These “urban villages” have fostered a connected community living instead of isolating citizens in tower blocks. This volume, the latest publication from The Why Factory, attempts to reconcile the two models, proposing a contemporary “vertical village” that restores neighborhood life to East Asian--and perhaps western--civic centers. It features innovative designs for high-rise structures, detailed case studies for Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Djakarta, Seoul and Bangkok, plus interviews with Winy Maas, Alfredo Brillemburg, Hubert Klumpner, Lieven De Cauter, Peter Trummer and families living in Taipei (where the originating Why Factory exhibition was held).

"Everybody's talking about Green these days; sustainable architecture and urbanism are getting almost universal attention. And they deserve it. Who could possibly oppose Green? But there's also a lot of suspicion around Green. Research is contradictory. Conclusions are ambiguous. Born-again sustainability gurus are appearing out of nowhere, advocating new truths. Politicians and developers misuse ecology to promote their own agendas. Greenwashing has become the state-of-the-art marketing tool. Who can we trust? Some things are wrong with Green... Can we overcome this moment of confusion and abuse? What we need, to proceed effectively, is a neutral, rational tool that can balance and validate vague assumptions about Green. Can we invent a calculator for Green that exposes our dilemmas and judges our efforts? That brings about a new aesthetics, linked to a more advanced understanding of nature? That could even beat nature? The Why Factory is a global think-tank and research institute, run by MVRDV and Delft University of Technology and led by professor Winy Maas. The Why Factory's Future Cities research programme explores possibilities for the development of our cities by focusing on the production of models and visualizations for cities of the future"

Welcome to Porous City ! Welcome to a porous society ! Welcome to cities that want to be open and porous ! Our cities consist of buildings that are introverted and not mixed with urban life. They are closed. How to open them ? How can we introduce pockets for encounters, for streams of circulation, for green areas, for tunnels of cooling... What logics can be imagined in our towers to allow for this openness ? Using stepped floors ? Creating grottos ? Splitting towers ? Twisting blocks ? Every hypothesis leads to a series of interventions. How far can we go before the tower collapses, before it is unaffordable ? Together, these series form an army of towers that contributes to a more porous city. Why wait ?
