Does the term 'post-classical' have any relevance in current debates on contemporary cinema? This book offers a positive answer with the help of historical poetics and a number of contemporary popular films from across the globe. Chungking Express (1994), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1998), Fight Club (1999), Magnolia (1999), Requiem for a Dream (2000), Amelie (2001), Moulin Rouge (2001), City of God (2002) and Oldboy (2003) are some of the examples analysed here in depth in order to map the formal principles of post-classical cinema. With a strong foothold in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America the post-classical mode of narration offers contemporary filmmakers a fresh set of creative options for staging, framing and editing their stories. With meticulous emphasis on formal distinctions this volume differentiates the post-classical paradigm from the powerful classical Hollywood tradition and opens up the territory for new formal frameworks and concepts."--Publisher.

"Wag the Dog is a film that became a media event and a cultural icon because it inadvertently short-circuited the distance that is supposed to separate reality and fiction. The film's narration challenges the established boundaries between the fiction and nonfiction tradition, as Barry Levinson, the director, embeds his interest in documentary filmmaking and complicates the issue of narrative agency in the way he frames the story. The examination of the historical and social context in which it was produced, exhibited and received worldwide enables the author to illuminate a series of changes in the way a fiction film reflects and interacts with reality, urging us to reconsider some of our central and long-standing concepts or even paradigms in film theory. Eleftheria Thanouli provides new insights into a series of issues from both classical and contemporary film theory, like the conceptual and ontological stakes in the use of digital technology, the impact of mass media on public memory and the political role of cinema in a globalized and conglomerated world."--

"A new and rigorous exploration of post-classical cinematic narration, prioritizing current examples and re-evaluating its development away from linear storytelling and its growing innovations in film form and narrative conventions"-- In A Guide to Post-classical Narration, Eleftheria Thanouli expands and substantially develops the innovative theoretical work of her previous publication, Post-classical Cinema: an International Poetics of Film Narration (2009). A Guide to Post-classical Narration: The Future of Film Storytelling presents a concise and comprehensive overview of the creative norms of the post-classical mode of narration. With dozens of cases studies and hundreds of color stills from films across the globe, this book provides the definitive account of post-classical storytelling and its techniques. After surfacing in auteur films in varied production milieus in the 1990s, the post-classical options continued to gain ground throughout the 2000s and 2010s, gradually fertilizing several mainstream productions in Hollywood. From Lars von Trier's Europa (1991) to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead (2021) and Baz Luhrmann's Elvis (2022), the post-classical narration has shown not only impressive resilience but also tremendous creativity in transforming its key formal principles, such as fragmented and multi-thread plotlines, hypermediated realism, parody, graphic frame construction, complex chronology, and intense self-consciousness.Through the meticulous textual analysis of the post-classical works, Eleftheria Thanouli addresses head-on a series of methodological questions in narrative research and brings the tradition of historical poetics back into the limelight. By reinforcing her previous work with numerous new films as well as more nuanced narrative terms and concepts, she not only strengthens her position on post-classical cinema but also establishes the relevance of formalist analysis in the study of film today.

Puzzle Films examines the influence of a new storytelling epoch on contemporary world cinema. Identifying and analyzing films that reject classical storytelling techniques and instead embrace nonlinearity, time loops, and fragmented spatio-temporal reality as their narrative form, these films blur the boundaries between different levels of reality, are riddled with gaps, deception, labyrinthine structures, unreliable narrators, and overt coincidences. Drawing upon the expertise of film scholars from around the world, this edited collectioninvestigates a number of films that sport complex storytelling--from Memento, Old Boy, and Run Lola Run, to the Infernal Affairs trilogy and In the Mood for Love. At a time when many a film is asking more--not less--of fans and cineastes, Puzzle Films will help viewers keep pace with a form of narration that captures the anxiety and ambiguity of our time.
