"Tate Britain is the home of British art from 1500 to the present day. This luxury guide to the highlights of the collection provides an essential introduction to the extraordinary development of British art over the centuries, telling the story of the collection and presenting a selection of the stunning works on display. The British art in Tate's collection is rich with imaginative invention and reinvention. This panoramic book celebrates this aesthetic ingenuity as an ongoing story, revealing how five hundred years of art can act as a fascinating lens through which to deepen our understanding of ourselves and society, past and present, in both Britain and in the rest of the world."

Abstract

Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey is one of the most influential contemporary artists working today. Since he came to prominence in the late 1990s, Leckey's practice has addressed the radical effect of technology on popular culture and has powerfully articulated the transition from analogue to digital culture. His work is often concerned with under-represented or overlooked aspects of British culture and explores ideas about both collective and personal history. For example, the film Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore 1999 uses sampled footage to trace dance subcultures in British nightclubs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Dream English Kid, 1964-1999 AD 2015 focuses on key episodes in his own life, constructed from "found memories" sourced primarily from the internet. This book, accompanying Leckey's first major show at Tate, combines newly commissioned writing with artist's scripts for performances, and illustrates his previous work as well as the intriguing sources of inspiration for this powerful, immersive new exhibition.

Abstract

"The papers in this volume were presented at the Icon Publishing Group conference _Appearance and Reality: Examining Colour Change in Paintings_ which attempted to present an overview of the current state of research related to colour change in paintings, ranging from Old Masters to modern art. The contributors addressed not only analytical investigation into changes in painting materials, but also methods of assessing colour change, lighting paintings, alternative methods of display, and different approaches to the restoration of paintings whose colour and tonality have shifted."--Back cover.

Abstract

"John Ruskin was the first critic to make his reputation by championing contemporary art: first by defending Turner, in his book Modern Painters, and then by giving his decisive support to the avant-garde, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He bacame one of the defining voices of the nineteenth century, engaging not only in the discussion of art and architecture, but in the social issues of his age. Ruskin, Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites, which marks the centenary of Ruskin's death, recovers his role as a contemporary critic by bringing together many of the masterpieces that he wrote about, and exploring his personal links with some of the greatest painters of the Victorian period. He was also an artist in his own right, and Ruskin's finest drawings are used to demonstrate the arguments of a critic for whom 'All great art is praise.' Also featured are many works that were in Ruskin's own art collection"--Page 4 of cover.

Abstract

Abstract
