Despite seeming simplicity of granular materials, their physical properties are very different from conventional solids, liquids and gases due to the dissipative and highly nonlinear nature of forces among grains. This leads to a rich diversity of patterns which emerge in granular materials upon external excitation, which includes ripples, avalanches, or bands of segregated materials.
