Abstract

Policy-Based Network Management (PBNM) systems enable business rules and procedures to be translated into policies that configure and control the network and its services. Those who manage network systems are aware that this approach can benefit both network management as well as the development of applications that use network services; however, the details surrounding these systems has been obscured by marketing hype, numerous acronyms, and theoretical complexities. Policy-Based Network Management: Solutions for the Next Generation cuts through the hype surrounding PBNM and makes it approachable for those who really need to understand what it has to offer. The author, founder of the IETF Policy Framework working group, discusses system requirements, information models, and system components for Policy-Based Management. He also provide practitioners with a resource for developing and/or incorporating PBNM systems. As network systems become larger and more complex, creating policies for them has become a crucial step in the management of network systems, and this book is a welcome addition to this exciting approach. * Presents a completely new approach to PBNM that unites the business, system, and implementation spheres. * As the basis for examples and discussion, uses the DEN-ng information model, an easy-to-understand open standard tied closely to eTOM and NGOSS. * Introduces the Ponder system, then examines Ponder extensions designed to enhance the structure of high-level policies and their application in a PBNM system. * Filled with examples illustrating how policies are most effectively used in a PBNM system and what new directions PBNM is likely to take.

Abstract

This book presents a comprehensive reference of state-of-the-art efforts and early results in the area of autonomic networking and communication. The essence of autonomic networking, and thus autonomic communications, is to enable the self-governing of services and resources within the constraints of business rules. In order to support self-governance, appropriate self-* functionality will be deployed in the network on an application-specific basis. The continuing increase in complexity of upcoming networking convergence scenarios mandates a new approach to network management. This Volume explores different ways that autonomic principles can be applied to existing and future networks. In particular, the book has 3 main parts, each of them represented by three papers discussing them from industrial and academic perspectives. The first part focuses on architectures and modeling strategies. Part two is dedicated to middleware and service infrastructure as facilitators of autonomic communications, and the last part addresses autonomic networks, specifically how current networks can be equipped with autonomic functionality and thus migrate to autonomic networks.

Abstract

Research and development of autonomics have come a long way, and we are - lighted to present the proceedings of the 4th IEEE International Workshop on Modeling Autonomic Communications Environments (MACE 2009). As in the last three years, this workshop was held as part of Manweek, the International Week on Management of Networks and Services, which took place in the cult- ally rich city of Venice in Italy. Manweek is now an umbrella of ?ve workshops and conferences focusing on di?erent aspects of network and service mana- ment, including MACE, distributed operations and management (DSOM), - basedmanagement(IPOM),towardsmultimediaandmobilenetworks(MMNS), and virtualization and middleware for next generation networks (NGNM). F- ther information of Manweek and the individual workshops and conferences can be found athttp://www.manweek.org. MACE started as an experiment, in 2006, and created a small community that now ?nds itself attracted back each year by a feeling of excitement and anticipation to share new advances and development. Certainly, MACE is not as shiny or practiced as other well-known conferences and workshops, but we consider this a feature of the workshop itself. New ideas, a little rough around theedges(andsometimesmorethanalittle),oftenquiteun?nished, popoutand provoke extensive discussion. Science needs this kind of exploratory adventure, and we have been strongly motivated to continue preserving this atmosphere of exploration and discussion in this year’s technical program.

Abstract

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the fourth International Conference on Mobile Networks and Management, MONAMI 2012, held in Hamburg, Germany, in September 2012. The 15 revised full papers presented were carefully selected and reviewed from numerous submissions. In addition two well-received workshops are presented: the second MONAMI Workshop on Smart Objects and the first Open Connectivity Services Workshop, organized in cooperation with the EU FP7 SAIL project. All in all, 25 papers were orally presented at the conference. The papers are organized in five topical sections: mobile networks, heterogeneous networks, wireless communications, smart objects and IoT applications, and future networks.
