Marx speaks in "Das Kapital" of the "animal spirits", the "spirits of life". They awaken when people are together spatially. Thus, an audience is by no means a mere sum of individuals. The most important things happen between people, because "No one person who stands alone is smart enough". "Cooperation" is also within them: "I think I am, because I can ignore it. I am actually by no means alone; others are within me, and they think incessantly, because that is their form of self-defence." In Alexander Kluge's conceptual inventory as well as in his practical work, "cooperation" is one of the most important key words to be noted.

Flaschenpost war Adornos resignative Metapher aus dem Jahr 1940 für die eingebüßte Wirkungsmacht der Kritischen Theorie im Exil. Echos einer Flasche heißt für Kluge die bescheidene Optik – etwas indirekt im Glassplitter sehen – womit er wirksame Perspektiven im globalisierten 21. Jahrhundert sucht. Der zweite Band des Kluge-Jahrbuchs widmet sich einerseits Kluges theoretischer Verwandlung am Beispiel seiner Theoriearbeit mit Oskar Negt und andererseits den multimedialen Sichtweisen, die nicht nur seine »Haltung der Bescheidenheit« zum Ausdruck bringen, sondern auch seine theoretischen Wurzeln offenlegen. Adorno characterized Critical Theory as a message in a bottle in 1940 when the exiled Frankfurt School's sphere of influence was an ocean away from the catastrophes of fascism it sought to fight. Turning Adorno’s metaphor on its head some six decades later, Kluge likens his creative method in the interview with Oskar Negt that opens the second volume of the Kluge-Jahrbuch to echoes of light refracted through a bottle: “I can also see something by looking through shards of glass,” he explains. Deploying this turn of phrase as its point of departure, this issue of the Jahrbuch devotes its attention first to Kluge’s theory work written with Negt, its roots in and adaptation of the Frankfurt School tradition as well as its indebtedness to other schools of thought. In the remainder of the volume, scholars working in five different disciplines across the humanities query Kluge’s ways of seeing in film, television and literature.

À cause de son ampleur (plus d'un demi-siècle de travail) et de la variété de ses différents domaines — littérature, cinéma, art contemporain et télévision —, l'œuvre d'Alexander Kluge, né en 1932, jouit d'un prestige unique dans l'univers intellectuel et artistique de l'Allemagne d'aujourd'hui. Pourtant, elle n'a pas reçu en France d'accueil à sa mesure, du moins jusqu'aux années 2010 et à l'édition chez P.O.L de la monumentale Chronique des sentiments, entièrement repensée par son auteur pour le public français. Prendre acte de sa reconnaissance tardive, ne serait-ce pas aussi l'occasion de renouveler l'approche de cette œuvre et d'en réévaluer la portée ? Tel a été le pari de ce colloque de Cerisy, organisé en juin 2019, pour débattre de l'œuvre d'un grand auteur allemand, en présence de celui-ci. La production de Kluge est abordée ici en trois parcours : ses aspects principaux, notamment philosophiques et littéraires ; la pluralité de ses pratiques artistiques (dont cinéma, musique et installations) ; et sa façon d'évoquer, à travers l'histoire, un monde qui, loin d'un cosmos perdu et face à un chaos croissant, reste l'horizon de tout possible. Riche en inédits : cinq récits et quatre entretiens avec Gorbatchev, Boulez, Godard et Stiegler, ce volume est aussi illustré de planches que Kluge a composées pour l'occasion.
