Dit boek is samengesteld ter gelegenheid van de zestigste verjaardag van de Nederlandse tak van de International Police Association (IPA). Het boek richt zich op een reeks van recente studies met betrekking tot criminaliteit in een gedigitaliseerde samenleving. De inhoud concentreert zich op de politie en de bestrijding van criminaliteit in een digitaal tijdperk. Er wordt een algemeen overzicht gegeven van de resultaten en de impact daarvan op (inter)nationale politieorganisaties. Het boek biedt verschillende opties en aanbevelingen voor het implementeren van strategieën waarmee de Nederlandse politie zich kan aanpassen aan de snelle veranderingen op dit gebied. Deze uitgave is primair gericht op de leden van de IPA, maar bevat ook nuttige informatie voor Politieacademiestudenten en politiepersoneel dat betrokken is bij de aanpak van cybercrime.Er is een toename van digitale (ICT) componenten in traditionele misdaden. Hacken is nu een van de veelvoorkomende misdaden in Nederland. De studies in dit boek suggereren dat het verstandig is om publiek-private samenwerkingen te versterken, internationale samenwerking uit te breiden en te investeren in het politieonderwijs. De politie wordt tevens geadviseerd om haar strategie na te lopen en waar nodig aan te passen, en rekening te houden met een wijziging in de politieclientèle. Tot besluit, aanvullend onderzoek is vereist om beter te begrijpen wat er gebeurt in deze snel veranderende digitale wereld.

In 2013, a Dutch newspaper reported that 'online theft kills one-man businesses'. The digitisation of society offers businesses opportunities, but also poses risks. However, scientific evidence on the extent to which businesses actually fall victim to cybercrime is scarce. This book contains the findings of a study into cybercrime victimisation among Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME's) and One-Man Businesses (OMB's) in the Netherlands that was conducted from 2013 until 2015. Over 1200 SME's and more than 1,600 OMB's were surveyed. The report presents unique figures on the extent and impact of cybercrime amongst businesses. The results indicate that more than a quarter of Dutch businesses are confronted with cybercrime. Victims are self-reliant: they seldom contact law enforcement, but instead take action to prevent and solve cybercrime problems themselves. As a consequence, police lack insight into the nature and extent of cybercrime amongst SME's and OMB's, which hampers the ability of law enforcement to contribute effectively to the fight against cybercrime. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the digitisation of society and its implications for crime and law enforcement.
