Die Epistula ad Afros, ein Schreiben an die Bischöfe der Diözese Africa, das wahrscheinlich um 366/67 abgefasst wurde, ist ein wichtiges Zeugnis für die theologische Position des Athanasius in der bisher wenig beachteten Zeit nach der Rückkehr aus seinem letzten Exil. In Auseinandersetzung mit der Synodalgeschichte seit Mitte der 50er Jahre des 4. Jahrhunderts stellt er nachdrücklich das Nizänum als einzig orthodoxes und katholisches Glaubensbekenntnis in den Vordergrund seiner Darlegungen. Der vorliegende Band bietet eine Übersetzung und Einzelkommentierung des Schreibens unter philologischen, dogmengeschichtlichen und theologischen Gesichtspunkten. In der Einleitung werden behandelt: Überlieferung, Adressaten, Abfassungszeit, Echtheit, Form und Gattung, Verhältnis zu anderen Schriften des Athanasius, Sprache, Stil, Formen der Argumentation und Aufbau der Schrift. The Epistula ad Afros, a letter to the bishops of the diocese of Africa which was probably written approx. 366/367 CE, is an important witness to the theological position of Athanasius in the period after his return from his last exile, a period given little attention up to now. In reference to synodical history as of the middle of the fifties in the fourth century, he expressly puts the Nicene Creed in the foreground of his thoughts as the only orthodox and catholic confession of faith. The present volume offers a translation and individual commentary on the letter from the viewpoints of philology, the history of dogma, and theology. The introduction deals with the following: the transmission of the letter, addressees, date of writing, genuineness, form and genre, relationship to other writings of Athanasius, language, style, forms of argumentation, and structure of the letter.

The philologist Eduard Schwartz helped shape philological, historical, and theological research on antiquity and late antiquity. This book is an anthology of presentations at a conference held on the occasion of Hanns Christof Brennecke's 65th birthday, where Schwartz's work was evaluated in a lively discussion from the perspectives of contemporary scholarship in philology, ancient history, and church history.

Lieferung des ersten Teiles vorgesehen) der "Athanasius Werke" wird die Herausgabe der "Dokumente zur Geschichte des Arianischen Streites" weitergeführt, die Hans-Georg Opitz in den Jahren 1934 und 1935 begann. Der Faszikel enthält die Texte, welche die Auseinandersetzungen um die Trinitätstheologie zwischen nizänisch-augustinischer und „arianisch“-homöischer Richtung in den gentilen Nachfolgereichen der Vandalen, Burgunder, Ostgoten, Westgoten und Merowinger dokumentieren. Dazu gehören u.a. Texte zum Konzil von Karthago 484 unter Hunerich, zur Auseinandersetzung zwischen Fulgentius von Ruspe und Thrasamund (Vandalen) sowie zwischen Avitus von Vienne und Gundobad (Burgund), zur Konfessionsfrage im Frankenreich unter Chlodwig (Merowinger), zu Theoderich (Ostgoten) sowie relevante kirchenrechtliche und päpstliche Dokumente. Die Lieferung beschließt die Reihe mit Dokumenten zur Konversion des Westgotenherrschers Rekkared (Ende 6. Jh.) und dem Symbolum Quicumque. Die Dokumente werden zum Teil neu ediert und mit einer Einleitung, Übersetzung und Kommentierung präsentiert. Eine Bibliographie und ein Stellenregister sind beigegeben. The second and final part of Vol. 3 of the Documents on the History of the Arian Controversy includes texts from the struggles on trinitarian theology between the Nicaean-Augustinian and Arian position on consubstantiality in the gentile successor kingdoms of the Vandals, Burgundians, Ostrogoths, Visigoths, and Merovingians. It concludes with documents on the conversion of the Visigoth king Reccared (end of 6th c.) and the Athanasian Creed.

The fourth instalment of the first part of VolumeIII of Athanasius' Works continues the publication of documents on the Arian conflict started by Hans-Georg Opitz in 1934 and 1935. Following on from the third instalment, which ended with the Formula makrostichos, the fourth instalment now includes the four Sirmian formulae, the texts of the Synods of Rimini/ Seleukia/Constantinople 359/360 and the Synod of Alexandria 362 together with a German translation. A bibliography and index are appended to the fascicle.
