Abstract

Zone of Evaporation: Samuel Beckett's Disjunctions is a valuable, and very readable, addition to Beckett studies. From Dream of Fair to Middling Women to How It Is , the book traces the modes of disjunction Beckett employed in his effort to "eff the ineffable". From the comic incongruities of Watt to the ontological gaps of The Unnammable, Zone of Evaporation demonstrates the crucial and consistent role disjunction played in Beckett's novels. The book describes Beckett's divergence from Proustian metaphor and the revelation of the "real" towards an art which exploited the gaps and fissures within language and narrative and, ultimately, to an art which would go on to upset the post-structuralism of Jacques Derrida. For those coming fresh to the works, Zone of Evaporation , written with an eye on the comic instincts of Beckett, provides almost a disjunctive guide to Beckett's early and mid-period novels. To the seasoned Beckett reader, Zone of Evaporation offers an engaging, and challenging, new perspective on Beckett's aesthetic practice.

Abstract

This book examines the relationship between the experience of employment and changing organizational forms, boundaries and the context of work. It explores a range of critical sociological and political economy processes in the context of workplace restructuring, employment and labor market regulation in the wider community. Especially important are the themes of gendered and ethically embedded labour markets for young people, trade union and local activism, gendered identity in management, market turbulence and call centers. The book offers an international perspective that includes chapters based on case work from the UK and Turkey.

Abstract

There are a number of places where sociologists of work and labour, together with labour movement activists, might search for alternatives to neo-liberal ideologies and practices. One obvious place to explore the scope and possibility for labour research might be where labour on an international terrain is attempting to match international capital and in this issue of the journal contributors consider this in light of the strategic orientation (and outcomes) of labour networks, sectoral organising, European Works Councils and workplace agenda in the context of management regimes.
