Am Beispiel von Louis Aragon, Paul Éluard, Miguel Hernández, Gabriel Celaya, Cesare Pavese und Rocco Scotellaro zeigt diese Untersuchung aus komparatistischer Perspektive, unter welchen Umständen sich in den 30er und 40er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts in Frankreich, Spanien und Italien viele bedeutende Dichter von der für die moderne Lyrik seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts charakteristischen Dunkelheit in Thematik und Stil verabschiedeten, um auf diese Weise gesellschaftliche Verantwortung zu übernehmen. Der typologische Vergleich analysiert die Motivationen, Gegenstände und Formen der sozial engagierten Lyrik vor dem Hintergrund der faschistischen Bedrohung für das europäische Geistesleben, die ihren Höhepunkt während des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs und des Zweiten Weltkriegs erreichte.
