E come ricordare? Why it is worth mentioning? What to remember and what to forget? And how to remember? For decades these questions are at the center of a debate that has invested even scope search medievistico. Memory, in fact, is recognized as one of the building blocks for the establishment of individual and collective identity. As with subjective level, moreover, also the construction of their bond with the other gets forming not only by identifying common experiences and expectations but also by establishing and preserving those memories deemed useful to orientate yourself in the present because founding. The destruction inflicted by the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in Milan in the spring of 1162 is certainly to Milan, for Italy but also for Germany itself one of these core memories. Projected continuously in the collective imagination, reworked by the cultural elite as a ' place of memories ', namely a creative workshop of identity, over the centuries, the image of the destruction of the city and its author has taken on different meanings, adapting to the different historical-political and cultural contexts in which it was commemorated. The volume, which contains the proceedings of a seminar organised by the Catholic University of the sacred heart of Milan and the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rome, traces the history of this place of memories ' from the Middle Ages up to the present day.
