Abstract

Metropolitan Museum of Art curators William M. Ivins and A. Hyatt Mayor assembled one of the world's greatest collections of prints, from Renaissance masterpieces to popular and ephemeral works. Celebrating the power of prints not only as aesthetic objects but also as rich sociohistorical documents, Ivins and Mayor expanded our appreciation of prints as the most democratic art form. Collecting across the full spectrum of the medium and writing about prints in accessible language, they transformed notions of how art reaches the masses. The first comprehensive exploration of the lives, careers, theories, and influences of Ivins and Mayor, this book also showcases more than 125 exceptional prints that represent the breadth and depth of their acquisitions, including works by Mantegna, Dürer, Callot, Rembrandt, Goya, Whistler, Toulouse- Lautrec, and Cassatt. The Power of Prints is a fitting tribute to two innovative scholars, as well as a timely meditation on the display and appreciation of art.

Abstract

"The Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) and the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) were avid draftsmen and printmakers who exploited the perceptual and emotional power of color for creative expression and portrayed what they perceived to be a fragmented and harrowing reality. A generation apart, they are considered modernist visionaries whose mental illness-both artists endured bouts of depression, substance abuse, and psychiatric hospitalizations-fueled their creative genius. Exploring how Munch and Kirchner depicted their shared traumatic experiences of both personal and societal anxiety, this study also looks at the ways in which the widespread nationalism and perceived moral decay throughout Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century paralleled a widespread interest in the recognition and treatment of mental illness and the development of psychoanalytic practice. Featuring never-before-published prints from the Nelson Blitz and Catherine Woodard collection, as well as etchings, lithographs, and hand-colored woodcuts from select museum collections across the United States, this volume puts these two transformative artists in a dialogue that foregrounds issues of mental health and offers a new and intriguing approach that blends art history with a history of medical treatment and illuminates new aspects of the artists' works"--

Abstract

The first comprehensive look at the origins and diffusion across Europe of the etched print during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The etching of images on metal, originally used as a method for decorating armor, was first employed as a printmaking technique at the end of the 15th century. This in-depth study explores the origins of the etched print, its evolution from decorative technique to fine art, and its spread across Europe in the early Renaissance, leading to the professionalization of the field in the Netherlands in the 1550s. Beautifully illustrated, this book features the work of familiar Renaissance artists, including Albrecht Durer, Jan Gossart, Pieter Breughel the Elder, and Parmigianino, as well as lesser known practitioners, such as Daniel Hopfer and Lucas van Leyden, whose pioneering work paved the way for later printmakers like Rembrandt and Goya. The book also includes a clear and fascinating description of the etching process, as well as an investigation of how the medium allowed artists to create highly detailed prints that were more durable than engravings and more delicate than woodblocks.--éd.
