Le Dominicain autrichien Heinrich Denifle (1844-1905) fut un des grands historiens de la fin du XIXe siècle. Il a laissé une oeuvre considérable et souvent novatrice, toujours lue aujourd'hui, portant aussi bien sur l'histoire des universités médiévales ou la mystique rhénane que sur la guerre de Cent ans, la crise de la fin du Moyen Âge ou Luther. Grand voyageur, chercheur internationalement reconnu, il était au coeur des réseaux savants de son époque. Sous-archiviste du Vatican, il fut un des acteurs du renouveau intellectuel et scientifique de l'Église et de la papauté au temps du pape Léon XIII, dont il fut proche.
