This UK report is part of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation research programme on Transitions after 50. It investigates people’s experiences, decisions and issues when they leave work towards retirement age. Often a premature departure from work can lead to disappointment and disorientation. The report explores how people are making transitions in leaving work early and towards retirement. It particularly identifies characteristics and experiences of people who leave permanent jobs between age 50 and retirement and makes suggestions for future retirement policy that would benefit older workers. A possibility is flexible employment that can bridge the gap between permanent full-time job and retirement.
