Abstract

The subject of this thesis is the interpretation and visualisation of water flowing in the subsurface towards a drinking well. These drinking wells are part of production sites run by De Watergroep. The company plans to install a new set of wells near the city of Borgloon where they are planned to replace older existing ones. This study is part of a larger scale project by De Watergroep to treat the hardness of the water and to group multiple wells. The groundwater in the study area is mainly present in three water-bearing layers. These deposits are separated from each other by thin impermeable layers, mainly consisting of clay. The wells pump their water from the deepest and thickest layer. This layer is of Cretaceous age - around 70 million years old - and consists mainly of fine limestone. The study contains a short geographical and geological setting, followed by a more comprehensive literature study on the characteristics of the groundwater flow system and the production sites. The research questions are tackled by the construction of a groundwater model. The set-up of such a modelling project and all its components are elaborately discussed. The model will serve as a tool to try to quantify the impact the installation of the new wells will have on the groundwater levels, both at the surface and in the deeper layers. As is customary for this kind of study, several assumptions have to be made when transforming reality into a computer model. A significant part is therefore reserved for the review of these assumptions. The software to perform the modelling is called Processing Modflow, an open source program suitable for this kind of research. Different scenarios were simulated, each having a different set-up and discharge of the new pumping wells. Analysing the scenarios showed that it is not likely that increased impacts on the groundwater levels under the modelled pumping regimes will occur. The effects of increased pumping from the deepest groundwater layer will be compensated by a combination of an increased supply from the horizontal groundwater flow and a higher inflow of water from the layers above.
