"Absurd Thinking: Between Art and Design is a survey of work by artist/architect Allan Wexler. The book features projects developed across the artist's forty-five-year career that mediate the gap between fine and applied art using the mediums of architecture, sculpture, photography, painting, and drawing. Wexler's works can be broadly described as tactile poetry composed by re-framing the ordinary. They sustain a narrative about landscape, nature, and the built environment that highlights the intriguing and surprising characteristics latent in the elements and rituals that pervade daily life. Wexler's work is sometimes functional sometimes theoretical, and often a hybrid of the two. In all cases, it demonstrates a commitment to re-evaluating basic assumptions about the human relationship to the built and natural environments. Organized thematically across four categories—Abstraction, Landscape, Private Space and Public Places—this book is a richly illustrated cross-section of Wexler's multi-scale, multi-media work featuring his own writings, narratives and reflections"--Publisher's description.

In Search of African American Space' explores the relationship between the African diaspora and contemporary spatial practice from multiple critical vantages in order to locate a transhistorical moment in the afterlife of slavery. Traditional notions of space are challenged as the analyses in this volume transcend discipline, deriving from architecture, performance art, history, and visual theory. Richly illustrated and organized thematically, the anthology, edited by Jeffrey Hogrefe and Scott Ruff, is divided into two sections. The first is dedicated to an aspect of practice that has operated outside of the academy. Contributions by architects of arguably the first generation to work in the discourse of the African diaspora are featured. These architects are conscious of performances typologies of opposition that have emerged from the slave-ship hold, slave plantation quarters, and urban 'slum/ghetto' as they seek to define, interpret, and design African American art, architecture, and public space. In the second section, quotidian practices are rendered significant as expressions of culture, aesthetics, and political activism. The transformation of space is an act of autonomy. Making African American spatial practices present is vital in this volume for to allow their absence, denial, or erasure is to allow the lingering effects of slavery to manifest as part of the contemporary condition.

This is the first comprehensive monograph on the work of Michael Webb, an artist who is also a trained architect and who operates at the intersection of the two disciplines. He is widely known for creatively exploring the boundaries of drawing techniques, specifically perspectival projection. Webb's aspirations for and re-conceptions of both built and natural environments are revealed between a twenty-year study on perspective projection that utilizes as its subjects the Regatta Course at Henley-on-Thames in England, and early work, some of which was done in conjunction with Archigram, an avant-garde group concerned with theorizing and critiquing architecture which formed during the 1960s at the Architectural Association in London. The publication connects nearly sixty years of the artist's work into a continuously evolving narrative about the relationship between architecture, the automobile, and landscape. Webb's work investigates these relationships using notions of time, space, and speed, and analogue drawing tools such as pencil and collage, which are often rendered later in oil paint. The book features over 150 drawings: artistic works rooted in analytical thinking and structured around architectural elements and notational systems.

Pritzker Prize–winner Frank Gehry is widely considered one of the world’s most important living architects. Much of the genius of Gehry can be found in his drawings, works of art in their own right, whose progressions from paper architecture to built poststructuralist reality have changed our own visual landscape forever. Cahiers d’Art is proud to publish the complete collection of the drawings of Frank Gehry, documenting the sketches and studies of one of our foremost architects and designers alongside photographs of the completed maquettes and realized structures. This catalog that will critically present the entire oeuvre of Toronto-born, Los Angeles-based architect Frank Gehry (born 1929) using his sketches as the primary graphic material – includes texts and high-quality images of individual works and preparatory drawings.Frank Gehry is the recipient of the 1989 Pritzker Architecture Prize. He was the subject of a Sydney Pollack documentary, Sketches of Frank Gehry, and Vanity Fair ran a cover story labeling him the most important architect of our age.” His irreverent buildings, often incorporating swooping walls made of aluminum, titanium or stainless steel, are world-renowned attractions, and his iconic design for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao made both Gehry and the Basque city world-famous.
