This Special Issue is a collection of selected papers from the 3rd European Congress on Imaging Infection and Inflammation (www.nuclearmedicinediscovery.org/events.asp) and results of consensus sessions by major experts in the field including Nuclear Medicine physicians, Radiologists, Clinicians and microbiologists. The Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM) provides an opportunity to publish data that were presented and discussed at the meeting in Rome in December 2019. One of the extremely important missions of this meeting was to present the recently published guidelines on diagnostic imaging of infections, and find a consensus agreement on some still controversial issues. With this in mind, the aim of the present Special Issue is to publish selected papers on: • Overviews on published guidelines • Review on recent development of diagnostic imaging of infections • Consensus document on the use of FDG and WBC in infections • Consensus document on the requirement for new radiopharmaceuticals for imaging bacteria
Medicine --- infection --- vascular graft --- multimodality imaging --- WBC scintigraphy --- FDG-PET/CT --- angio-CT --- personalized medicine --- spondylodiscitis --- spine infection --- MRI --- 18F-FDG PET/CT --- diabetic foot --- diagnosis --- FDG PET/CT --- polymeric nanoparticles --- PLGA --- optical imaging --- tumor targeting --- imaging --- [18F]FDG PET/CT --- fever of unknown origin --- FUO --- PET/CT --- 18F-FDG-PET/CT --- Infective endocarditis --- echocardiography --- computed tomography --- magnetic resonance imaging --- nuclear imaging --- positron emission tomography --- endocarditis team --- cardiac implantable electronic device --- bacteria --- radiopharmaceutical --- molecular imaging --- nuclear medicine --- prosthetic joint infection --- SPECT/CT --- radiology

This book is designed as a reference manual that is exceptional in systematically discussing every aspect of nuclear medicine imaging of infections, with careful explanation of the most up-to-date concepts and recent guidelines on diagnostic flowcharts as shared between the EANM, ESR, ESNR, ESCMID, ESC, EACVI, ECCO, ESGAR and EBJIS. It is truly comprehensive, describing all methods, all acquisition parameters, and all interpretation criteria in all infectious diseases. The early chapters discuss currently available radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine imaging technologies, including the hybrid modalities SPECT/CT, PET/CT, and PET/MRI. The remainder of the book is devoted to the nuclear medicine imaging of infections at different body sites as well as fever of unknown origin, fungal infections, and tuberculosis and AIDS-associated infections. Infections represent a real emergency globally, and early diagnosis and treatment follow-up will continue to pose huge challenges. In this context, Nuclear Medicine in Infectious Diseases will be a superb asset for nuclear medicine and infectious disease specialists and other clinicians everywhere.

This atlas fills a gap in the literature by documenting in detail the role of nuclear medicine imaging of infection and inflammation. The pathophysiologic and molecular mechanisms on which radionuclide imaging of infection/inflammation is based are clearly explained, but the prime focus of the book is on the clinical relevance of such procedures. Their impact is demonstrated by a collection of richly illustrated teaching cases that describe the most commonly observed scintigraphic patterns, as well as anatomic variants and technical pitfalls. Due attention is paid to the application of recently developed techniques, including multimodality fusion imaging such as SPECT/CT and PET/CT. Emphasis is placed in particular on the ability of multimodality imaging to increase both the sensitivity and the specificity of radionuclide imaging. This atlas will be an excellent learning tool for residents in nuclear medicine and illuminating for other specialists with an interest in the field. Learning tool especially useful for residents in nuclear medicine and for specialists in nuclear medicine approaching the field. Useful integration for residents and for specialists also in infectious and autoimmune diseases, as well as in orthopedics.
